I was a bit queasy to begin with, but now I don't get any problems.

A lot of RA meds can take a few weeks to get used to, but for most people the problems subside. So hopefully you will be fine soon.

Hi Anne and welcome to the site:-)

I too take Hydroxy, probably 15 months I reckon. I don't have any side effects on it, are you on anything else yet? Think most people tolerate Hydroxy well on this site but best discuss your concerns with your rheummy nurse and see what they think

All the best

Ronnie

Hi Anne Nice to have you on board, I am 9 weeks into a 12/16 week course of Hydroxy the only one I can take because of my P/F, The only side effects I experience are feeling of nauseous I take other meds but only noticed this when I started Hydroxy, I'm Sure there are others out there with the advice you seek, Good Luck Mattcass

Hi Anne....sorry that you've been recently diagnosed with RA, welcome to the club!:). I'm about to start taking Hydroxy after not getting on with two other RA meds, so fingers crossed for both of us. My Consultant said it's a fairly mild drug that doesn't cause too many side effects ....or words to that effect! No frequent blood tests needed either....Good luck and I hope it works for you x

Hi Anne, I was taking Hydroxy for a couple of months after being diagnosed in April. I didn't suffer any nausea at all which was great as almost all medication makes me feel sick. The only side effect i started to get was itchy, prickly skin which meant that i have now had to stop taking it which is a shame as Hydroxy was starting to work. I really hope that it works for you. Thanks to all who replied to me. It helps to talk to people with similar issues. I guess we are all different and react differently. I was told it would take 8-10 weeks for the meds to kick in. I did have cortisone injections but the first wore off and the 2nd didn't work at all. I haven't got a RA nurse yet. It all feels a bit of a struggle at the moment, I'm a positive person but do feel a bit on my own.

Hi Anne,I've been taking hydroxy now for almost a yr. It works for me, I find if I sit in the sun my skin can get a bit prickly. I take one in the morning after food & one before I go to bed I haven't really had any problems. Good luck & sorry that you've had to join our club x

Hi Anne - please don't feel alone - you really aren't that alone because we've all been where you are now and survived to tell the tale. It is a horribly isolating disease in some ways but coming here makes it far less so for many of us.

I took Hydroxy for a year and had no real problems with it but I was also taking Methotrexate. I did find that often I felt quite queasy after taking it but this was less of a problem if I took it after food and drunk a lot of water too. I think milk may have helped a bit as well. I'm now off all my drugs and waiting to find an alternative but I think I may be put on Hydroxy again and if I am I really won't mind at all. Tilda x

Hi Anne

Sorry to hear that you have RA too.

I also take hydroxy. I think it's probably been about 3-4 years now. I found I was better on the brand Plaquenil. Im not sure but I think this brand may be enteric coated ( might need checking with your pharmacist!) I felt sick when I took a cheaper version not enteric coated. I think different versions of the drug have different fillers too so it may be worth trying others. Maybe discuss with GP?

Good luck,

Rowan x

Hi Anne, I've been diagnosed for nearly 3 months and been taking hydroxy 200mg twice a day for 2 1/2 months now. To start with it made me feel nauseous with hot flushes and really quiet rough. This settled down after a week and all I get now are the hot flushes. Good luck with the hydroxy, it seems to work for most of my joints. Andreax

Hi Anne,

I'm also on Hydroxy & it made me terribly nauseous. So much to the point I didn't want to take it anymore. My Rheumy convinced me to stick with it & eventually it just stopped almost overnight. It did take a thoroughly miserable 10 weeks until it disappeared but now I have no trouble in taking it at all.

Hope it works for you!

Thanks for your message. It's all new to me but it helps to know that others have had same or similar problems. I was told the meds would kick in, in 8-10 weeks so hopefully it will all happen at once and I will feel normal again! Here's hoping. Anne
