Hi Binlid - Sorry to read about your Hubby's heart attack hope he's doing ok now. I started Sulpha just over two weeks ago and was doing ok, got up to two tablets a day, had a bit of a grumbly tummy but nothing major. On Thursday I came out in a huge blotchy rash and advised to stop it completely by my Rheumy. My GP had a look at it and wasn't quite sure what might have caused it as in the heat or the drug! So I'm back at square one again, I asked a similar question as you recently and had lots of positive replies about Sulpha so fingers crossed for you! Good luck, hope you and your hubby feel better soon.

Hello Binlid, hope your husband is doing well - you've obviously both been through a dreadfully tough time.

I'd been on methotrexate for ages & it wasn't quite cutting the mustard so Sulphasalazine was added in last March. I found it a funny one to adjust to and I did have a stomach upset for a while which might have been gastroenteritis or due to the Sulpha, hard to tell. But after the first month or so I had no problems with it. And my inflammation is down at long last, too. I suppose I think of it as small fry compared to Methotrexate though of course it is another strong drug but I just chuck it down twice a day & don't seem to react to it at all. It does seem to keep the bowels regular, but that's no bad thing!

Good luck with it. Luce xx

I've been on sulpha along with MTX & Hydroxy for years now, and don't have any problems with it. Like others have said it did upset my stomach to start with, but that settled down after a few weeks. And I have become sensitive to sun, but can manage that. The leaflet that comes with it explains how to take it. Hope hubby is on the mend. Polly

I have just been taken of sulfa,,reacted badly to it,,became extremely breathless, and had a bad rash on arms,,like miniature bruises,,had a blood test yesterday for a blood count, so will have to wait now to see what else they can offer me

Hi Binlid, so sorry to hear about your husband and really hope that he is recovering well. I am on 4 sulphasaline tablets a day, (well I was off them temporarily but back on them now) and have had no side effects at all. The only thing I would say is that they don't appear to work as well as metx or leflunomide.

I didn't have any problems with it until I got to three a day, then I had one of the delayed hypersensitivity reactions and felt really awful for a couple of days until I realised it was the SSZ. I came right again pretty quickly once I stopped it, though did have to take antihistamine for about two weeks to stop recurrence of the effects until it wore off completely. I then tried to restart it again (under doctors suggestion) at much lower dose with much slower increases, but that didn't work either and the doctor finally decided I had become allergic to it.

But, what was a bit of a surprise to me was that actually I didn't get any stomach upset from it as I had been expecting. I think everyone is different with it, so just be positive and try it, but remember that if you do happen to start feeling bad make sure you let your doctor or rheumatologist know quickly so they can tell you if you just need to slow down the increases or stop it completely.

My treatment started with Sulphasalazine (was up to 6 tablets per day) then they added hydroxychloroquine and finally added methotrexate (got up to 25mg per week on this). Other than sunsensitivity I did not have any problems on these meds (however my vests did collect some yellow staining under the armpits).

My RA started to be less well controlled on the "triple therapy" so have been on Cimzia + lower dose of MTX for 6 months now.

Hope this helps obviously everyone can react differently, my outlook is hope for the best be keep an eye open for any side effects and keep up with your bloodtests.
