I don't know Karri, I would imagine that some will come back (after years) but I'm sure there'll be lasting damage
Did anyone else see that programme a few years back when a newsreader who had quit some years before had the camera down to see how his lungs were recovering and if he'd done any lasting damage? It was really interesting, wish I could remember his blasted name!
If the NHS did that, it would probably be enough inspiration for me to quit immediately and forever!!
They do!!
I have read that the lungs do repair but only to a certain level, and that it all depends on what kind of smoker you were, how heavy and how long for.
The little hairy things in your lungs start to repair within the first few weeks though, and apparently thats what causes the coughs we have after quitting as its those hairy things that dispel the yukky stuff from the lungs.
It can take up to 36 months "to fix" the lungs and get them functioning as normal as possible, again depending on our habit. Ive also read that womens lungs improve twice as fast as mens!?
Apparently, drinking plenty of water as well as exercising and vitamins can all help to heal the lungs and encourage the repair
Cilia!!!
The hairy things are called Cilia, and they are what protect our lungs against germs and yukky stuff...these start to repair/work within a couple of weeks, and then gradually build up strength by the end of 12 months smoke free
My dad had half his left lung removed due to cancer in May, he has been told to do light exercise to get the lungs working and it will grow and start filling the "void", it won't totally regrow but enough that there is no longer a gap in his organs. He gave up smoking in march and was told that although he has COPD and emphysema his lungs should repair about 85% of the remaining damage over 15-20 years - he is 67 - so there is hope for all of us
