I've just seen on the news that New York will be raising the age for purchasing tobacco from 18 to 21. At the moment I'm really on the fence over this one, the new me staunchly thinks that it should be illegal to smoke - full stop - yet the old me is really pee'd off that governments are "nannying" their citizens and that they should be able to do what they like. What's your thoughts on this
New York's new law: I've just seen on the... - No Smoking Day

TBH I wish they'd either ban it or stop the nanny stuff.
Banning is preferrable to me, especially at the mo :/
Anyway while buying fags underage here would have been nearly impossible for me, it wasn't hard in Plymouth, doubt it would be that different in NY.

This is the problem, it's a unique situation, apart from illegal substances there is nothing more addictive than nicotine, and it's pretty much a guaranteed way to shorten your life - but at the same time it's heavily taxed and the government probably gains more than it loses. I just wish I could go back and show the fourteen year old me the 40 year old me, I don't think I would ever have started

And it's the only product that when you use it the way you're intended to, will harm you.
Know what you mean 13 year old me who thought social smoking was fun would be getting a good slap if I could :/
I really hope they never ban smoking. I dread to think what all the public health mandarins would move onto next ?
Being a kid now is bound to be awful... Everything is gonna kill us, sugar, fat, super bugs, fags, booze. sex.
Maybe we can all go live in stepford ?
Seriously leave people alone. It is getting mad when New York is gonna end up more regulated than some of the countries America takes issue with on civil liberties.
A giant coke anyone ?

Just to echo Paul's thoughts, did you see on the news today that an alcohol lobby group want to introduce alcohol testing in the workplace? Am I getting vibes from 1984 or should I just go and lock myself in room 101 before I commit some heinous social crime:mad:
You'd think we would have learnt from prohibition and it generally not having the desired outcome.
Although alcohol testing at work is probably not a bad thing for some jobs... Pilot, taxi driver, etc.....
I am more anti prohibition... It just seems a bit dumb for me to want to ban the stuff that I tried cause I'm no longer using it... All a bit 'do as I say' crap.
There is worse things to look at restricting but you'd think the way the lobbyists go on that if I smoke a cig me and all my off spring for 6 generations will go to hell in a oxygen tent.

Well i would like to see shopkeepers hung drawn and quartered for selling tobacco to kids. evil toads.
