I want to start with a better eating plan the 1st of July. I am just scared it will be too much or too soon after quitting. I feel so good, i want to get my weight straightened out as well.

Any advise or opinions welcome.:)

I found exercise helped me in my quit and having stopped I was a lot more able to do it. That minimised the weight gain for me, although now being unable to do a lot due to a prolapsed disc its going on a bit

Trying to quit and lose weight at the same time does put a lot on your plate at one time (pun intended) so if you find it tricky then deal with the smoking 1st then sort out the weight after. Health wise you a have to put on a gargantuan amount of weight to make it worse than smoking!

I see your point NicFirth, i can't work out either, had an Hernia operation and have 3-4 weeks to go before i can do that - dr's orders. But it's as you said, i would rather stay smoke free first.

Hello Vicki,

Well done to you.

There's no rule that says you can't keep your weight/eating in check and stay fag free. Maybe more important than just the weight though is keeping it in check by eating what is usually termed a healthy balanced diet. I mean people can put weight on even if they just eat "healthy" foods and people can lose weight on junk foods!! I also think how drastic the diet changes you are planning may also be significant.

Anyway, as people have said above, Fag Freedom should come first. However, if you feel ok with that then why not tackle the diet. There is no obligation to indulge in sugars/carbs and saturated fats when on the road to Fag freedom, although it may be helpful for some as a substitute for the missing nicotine impact.

I have followed my healthy eating plan since stopping. As well as helping maintain weight and re-feed my body with better stuff, it was also another alternative to anti depressants in order to combat a severe depression that hit.

I have breakfast (oatcakes with cottage cheese at the moment) and then eat frequent snacks throughout the day e.g. nuts, oatcakes, apples, bananas, probiotic yoghurt, chocolate soya milk etc and then have my main meal in the evening. I still have sugar in my tea, try and buy organic where I can and avoid anything low fat and/or low sugar where the substitution is more harmful in my opinion e.g. sugar and artificial sweeteners. I like a glass of red, love crispy type snacks and like going out for meals. I also go to the gym, swim and walk often.

Weight wise, I did n't lose much at first but I did maintain what I started out with until early this year when I shot up about 10 lbs for no diagnosed reason, went down again after having an infection, went back up another 7lbs in April for no identifiable reason and now have gone down 11 lbs.

I now weigh less than when I first stopped. A couple more pounds and I am back to where I feel most comfortable and within lower BMI region. However, I am going off how my jeans feel and waist measurements rather than just the scales as I have added a little to my muscle mass!!

Hope the above is a little helpful to you,

Best Wishes,

Smile X :)

Thank you Smile, i feel good at the moment and i thought i would wait till 1 July. I got a 3 day per week diet - it is specifically for my heart. The other four days you can eat normal, but to a limit. I am going to try that for one week and see how it goes. Health wise i think it will be good. I struggle with vasculitis as well and it's not nice...

Thank you for your advise.
