Hi All,

Started my 12wk Champix course with pill number 1 this morning:)

I've tried patches previously and always managed to stop smoking successfully for around 6-9months. After which time I have always started again. I find this period the most difficult for some reason. Part of this is no doubt due to my wife smoking in the evenings (outside). I'm hoping Champix will provide an "edge" over the patches which will assist my lack of longstanding will power

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Welcome to the forum :)

I haven't personally used champix, but it sounds pretty effective :)

Well done for deciding that it's time to get back onto the wagon again! Good luck, and don't forget to post on here if there anything you're unsure of/worried about or if you just fancy a good rant! :D

Welcome Tinribs!! :)

Have never tried Champix, but know there's several regulars on here who have, so am sure they'll be able to help out with any questions or concerns you may have :)

I hope this is *the* quit for you - good luck :D

Hopeful!

I have tried Nicorette and may I say that did not work for me at all! I am really hoping I can do this cold turkey, I would rather not use substitutes. My quitting day is tomorrow. I was looking at some of the CDC videos about people that had developed throat cancer which really scared me. I think that will be a good motivation! I am so anxious about tomorrow.

Hello Tin Ribs

Sorry I've not used Champix myself so can't offer you any advice there. I have heard it gives wonderful dreams though so maybe I've missed out. Instead I'll just congratulate you on your decision to quit and wish you well.

Welcome to you too Snickers and please stop worrying. Once you've made your mind up to quit and are on your way to freedom you'll find that it's not as difficult as you think - you've just got to 'want' it enough.

Best wishes to both of you.

I am so anxious about tomorrow.

Hi Snickers :)

I know it's incredibly easy to say and hard to do, but don't worry about Day 1!!

Didn't go cold turkey myself (am guessing you are?) but my first smoke-free day was actually not bad - certainly nothing like I was expecting/dreading.

Popped a patch on, got a fidget toy to keep my hands busy and chewed industrial amounts of chewing gum and it got me through!!

Some days will be harder than others, and you will need your guard up *but* life is so much better as a non-smoker :D

Thanks for the support. And, yes, I will be doing this cold turkey. I have tried other methods which always ended up in me continuing such a horrid habit. It is either cold turkey or nothing for me. Patches and others had no affect on me. It is more of my habit of inhaling than needing something to do with my hands.

That's the trickier bit to kick!!

Get yourself a fidget/tangle toy (here the NHS hand them out in Quit Kits) but they're only cheap anyway so your hands are busy, and if you really miss it smoke a lollipop or fake cigarette :)

Oh and post on here when you need help!!

Many thanks for all the posts of encouragement. Greatly appreciated.

Ta for the link Kat73, the "Champix Crew social group" will now be a regular spot for me.

Must say I'm intrigued by all the probable Champix side effects. Guess I'll cross that bridge etc, etc but the way I see it ... No pain, no gain.

However, if I awake tomorrow morning with two heads and webbed feet I may just reconsider my options :)

All the best for tomorrow Snickers - we're rooting for ya !!!

I think I know what you mean Snickers. For me no NRT products could replace that 'hit' that I got from smoking so I am going it alone and 4 days in I have to say it's not been too bad.

I forgot to mention that as well as the 'hit' my disgusting smoking habit gave me it also made sure that I eventually had a wheezy and chesty cough to go with it. I was also beginning to notice that I was experiencing shortage of breath from time to time but after almost 40 years of smoking I suppose that's the least I could expect. The funny thing was that I knew the health risks but just ignored them until they started to affect and scare me.

In the 4 days since I stopped smoking I have been amazed by the improvement to my health - the wheezing has gone, I have much more stamina and my nasty chesty cough is fast disappearing. This is all the proof I need to tell me that smoking, for me at least, has to be a thing of the past. I think this is why I am not finding my quit difficult, I know I have to give up now - I feel I have received a warning that I simply cannot ignore.

Good luck to you, you can do it.

Well said Linda !!!

This is exactly the motivation I am prescribing myself in order to escape the "glue" of smoking.

One thing that has always put me off smoking was listening to other smokers with their loose "rattle" laughs.

Well if that happens Ribs you may have to visit the quack's!

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Tin Ribs but I'm glad you can relate to what I was saying.

The difference in my health in the short time since I stopped smoking has been truly amazing. I had a cough that felt as if it was coming from the soles of my feet - it was awful and I used to be embarrassed that my neighbours might hear me. You couldn't mistake it for anything other than the typical cough of a long term smoker - absolutely disgusting. It is now merely a shadow of it's former self and that, in only 4 days is all the proof I need to make me stop smoking once and for all.

I know I will do it this time!

You can do it too, just believe in yourself and don't give in.

Wishing you the very best of luck.
