Patches when to apply?

Hi, I began my quit last night and applied my first patch so I was ready for morning cravings as that's my worst time but I had lots of crazy dreams! Is it better to apply patches in the morning? I feel I need to wear them 24hrs so I can handle the morning cravings ??

Morning, MrsMash and welcome to a) the Forum and b) your quit :)

Patches do seem to lead to dreams at night...odd dreams at that. Possibly you'd be better to apply the next patch tomorrow morning. At least by then you'll have a day under your belt so to speak.

Some patch users have posted that they take off their patch before going to bed because it helps to get them off to sleep and also helps to stop the odd dreams when sleeping.

It may help to search the forum for previous posts regarding patches. You can do that by selecting the 'search' button on the ruler above. You'll probably come across comments that can be negative in terms of patches and NRT. Just ignore them and focus upon the fact that you are using them and that's all that matters in this instance. By and large we advocate that all roads lead to Rome and whatever your quit method this Forum plus reading and education help quitters make a success of stopping smoking.

Good afternoon Mrs Mash,

I would put the patch on in the morning - if it's the 24 hour one I think it's designed for slow release over 24 hours - I amn't entirely sure but would think it would be a bit stronger when first applied than later.

I was on the 16 hour patches, puting one on 1st thing in the morning and taking it off at bedtime and it seemed to work for me. Once you are up and about in the morning any first crave that you are expecting should soon disappear as you get used to the idea that there are 101 reasons for getting out of bed - smoking not being one of them :o)

I did get vived dreams at first and if I forgot to take it off at night (even the low dose one). Now I think about it, I get a much more sound sleep now compared to when I smoked.

Best of luck with the quit - it can be an enjoyable experience in many ways!

Suze x

Thank you both for your replies! I think I'll apply the patch in the morning hopefully it won't be as strong at nighttime! I'm not going to take it off at night until I'm a bit further into my quit as I dont want to attempt fate! Thanks again!

Hi Mrs Mash we have the same name nearly and i too quit with patches. To be honest i dont think i could have quit without them, I wouldnt have even attempted to simply because i was convinced it was a very difficult thing to do... The patches however made it do-able and it was worth putting up with the vivid dreams and the minor sleep problems in order to quit and six months later i still am. I used to put mine on in the morning, it became a ritual which set me up for a day of not smoking. wearing patches means smoking is banned for the duration and once i accepted that it was a piece of cake.

all the best with your quit.

Thanks Mash! Yeah someone on another post asked if I was your wife lol! My real surname is Nash but my niece called me Mrs Mash on our wedding day and it stuck lol!

Yeah I think I'll put up with the dreams as the quit is the most important thing!!
