Hello all
If you are reading this then that's great you're already thinking about, are have already decided to quit. If you're just thinking about it, hurry up and do it, it's the best thing you will ever do. If you have decided already - fantastic, keep going.
I'm almost 5 months in, and I was a 30+ a day smoker for 25 years. I hardly ever think about them any more but I have reflected on the two moments when I very, very nearly gave in and so I hope it might be helpful if I tell you what they were, how I beat them and they might just help you get through your own dodgy moments.
I stopped on Friday January 6th and had got through the whole day not too badly, and then I arrived at my wee cottage in the countryside to discover that the a pipe had busrt and ater was pouring from the ceiling. At that moment i decided that I couldnt deal with this and stop smoking at the same time so I'd nip into the village and buy some fags. But I persuaded myself to turn the water off first and then go in, so I spent 15 minutes turning the water off. Then I said OK, mop up the excess water then go in and buy some. And so on for a couple of hours and by then I had got through it.
The next time was about 4 or 5 weeks later (I'm not saying these were my only cravings, just these were the two that I really very nearly gave up on) when I was out with a smoker friend for a drink - and I had too much to drink. And here is a warning, despite me pleading with him at the start of the night that even if I asked him to give me a fag he must not give me one - at about 1 in the morning when I was drunk I asked him for one and after a brief game of 'you asked me not to' he gave me one. I sat with it in my fingers and said OK, I'll just hold it and I'll light it after I have this beer, thenm I'll light it after this beer, then I'll light it wuth a cuppa etc. I never lit it.
So that was my two very close calls, I got through them. I hiope they help you get through yours.
Good Luck
