Thanks MAH. 4 months or 120 day completed and over 3000 fags not smoked
Just back from my 2nd session at the gym and I'm here to tell the tale (just). This is something I'd have never had even attempted to do as a smoker. My quit nurse has sent me to the gym (sort of on prescription) as I complained to her about how much weight I've put on. Basically it's cost me £65 for 10 weeks, and I can use the gym and the health suite (pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room). I think this is about £50 a month normally.
So today I've done the gym bit, then tried the steam room. Boy, I now know what the bottom of my lungs feel like.
I have to get fit as my daughter has asked me to do the race for life with her this year, and ideally I'd like to run or jog it, rather than crawl on my hands and knees.
This is especially poignant, as my mum was diagnosed with cancer of the bile duct last week. She's in hospital at the moment having more biopsies and drains put in. From what I've been told, it's a nasty little cancer with no chance of a cure. I just hope she comes out soon so that they can start treatment at a hospital nearer home, that will prolong her life. She was fine 2 weeks ago, so hopefully she'll have years left in her.
Mums' cancer and also my dads, was not caused by smoking (as neither of them ever smoked). When my dad died I used this as an excuse to carry on smoking, my thinking being 'dad died of cancer and he didn't smoke, so it doesn't matter if I smoke, cos it can get you anyway'.
I don't have this attitude today.
Hope I haven't depressed anyone, cos really I'm feeling quite upbeat. Mum's in the best place at the moment for her care, and I'm not upsetting her or my kids anymore by smoking, and deliberatly putting myself at risk.
Thanks guys xx
Well done Rachel...
on the magnificent quit
on the going to the gym
on the positive attitude towards your Mum
Hope she gets moved soon so she's nearer you, and fingers crossed that everything goes well for her.
Thank you for sharing
Well Done Rach :D
Sorry to hear about your Mum but you are absolutely right she is in the best place.

huge congratulations Rachel, you have been so supportive of others in their quits here that it is especially nice to see you reaching the four month mark
it's great you're feeling upbeat, it can only help yourself and others around you, and you know with a post like that you are more in danger of inspiring people than depressing them.
best wishes to you and your mum, 5mol<er
