i was talking to my mom this morning (which is rare)..she has been a smoker for about 45 years at about 1-2 packs per day..anyway..she said that she is

thinkng about quitting and she heard about champix and wanted to try that. i dont really know to much about the medication so i just shared with her my

cold turkey quitting experience. the thought of qutting ct for her seemed a little to much for her to handle:eek:. i thouroughly told her that i understand the feelings she is feeling about it and tried to reassure her that after a week the crave will lessen. im looking for some opions to see who took this med and did it help or not? she said that she heard that there are alot of side effects...then my dad chimes in and says//"your worried about side effects from this med but you dont worry about the side effects from smoking//lung cancer..heart problems--etc" then of course she is quiet..she has a TERRIBLE cough:eek: has no energy, her minds going..so many bad effects from smoking all these years!! im so happy that i stopped!! and yes my dad has been a smoker on & off..he only smokes when he drinks..

Hiya im a quitter,

The first thing I have to say is that Champix isnt an NRT treatment. It actually works by blocking certain receptors in your brain that the nicotine normally attaches itself to. It can also for some people change the taste of the Cigarettes. For me, I have found it really good. I have tried the NRT treatments before and found that because I have still been getting nicotine that I eventually started smoking again. Whereas with Champix, you still smoke for the first week or so of the course and slowly find that you no longer get the hit from the cigarette that you used to get. So in the end, you just can't be bothered to smoke as it isn't worth it.

Yes there can be side effects, but then again all medicines can have side effects. My wife has mental health problems and one side effect possible with her antidepresants is actually "depression" (I ask you!!!!). I have had nausea due to the Champix but found that eating before taking the pill stopped it. I am also suffering a little with wind due to the tablets, but hay, for once I can give the dog a run for his money :) .

For me, I have found it to be the best treatment so far, but obviously everyone is different. But if your mum wants to try them and finds later on that they don't agree with her, then she can always come off them again.

Hope this helps

Ian

I can't give an opinion on Champix, because I've never tried the stuff. I can, however, give my opinion on NRT versus going cold turkey. I have done both, and both successfully.

Obviously not. As you can only quit once successfully

I agree with everything Gizmo says. Champix worked for me, and there's no coming off the nicotine with that. Also I didn't finish the course, and have been doing well without them for the last 7 weeks x

Hiya, im a quitter.

Agree with everything Gizmo says. I took the full course and it worked brilliantly. As said previously, you give up smoking because there ends up being no point to smoking.

I did increase my intake a bit initially in an attempt to get the 'hit' but no matter how many I smoked I just never got satisfied.

In the end you chuck the fags as they've been rendered absolutely 100% useless. :D

I'm an advocate and apart from farting constantly I suffered no ill effects.

Anything that helps someone quit is great in my eyes and your dad is right, the side affects of the tablet could be NO WHERE NEAR the side affects as smoking itself so push her towards whatever she feels is best for her, everyone is different. I personally went cold Turkey, I seen no point in prolonging my agony BUT as I say everyone is different.

Just to add to another wee subject there, anyone past 30 days is classed by health professionals as a successfull quitter.

Hello everyone,

This is the first time I've posted on this site even though I've been reading here religiously for the past 25 days :) After reading these posts I was compelled to share my experience. I am currently using Champix and find it to be amazing ! That's not to say I'm not experiencing side effects though - headaches (sometimes), indigestion (pretty often), nausea (not so often anymore) and still some problems with a slow moving digestive system - lol. BUT I am NOT smoking !! I've tried ct two yrs ago and lasted 10 agonizing days before I finally gave in. That's not to say ct isn't effective - it just wasn't effective for me. So, if she believes that Champix may help her get free - I'd tell her to go for it ! She has so much to gain :) Btw, Congrats to everyone here who has already quit and all the ones reading these messages preparing to quit !

Have to say, the whole 30 day thing made me feel better too. Woohoo, I'm a successful quitter. Stick that on your fork and eat it!!!

(Can't use the other saying as we successful quitters don't do that anymore do we)

That's the nicest way I've heard anyone describe constipation and flatulence. :D hahha

Just to remind you - take the tab with food and I mean 'with'. Not after, not before - DURING. That helped me a lot with the tummy troubles.
