Hi Everyone that knows me, just to boast that I reached 8 months off the fags on 18th August 2010 and I am heading towards the 9 month marker. It has been an unusual quit in that some of the symptoms that I have experienced don't seem to conform to most other people's, who have quit?. Most who know me will know that I have suffered mild Depression during my quit (Noted symptom with people who quit)even up until quite recently and most people only seem to suffer this around the three month quit, but I wonder if my depression is from worrying about my health? . Last December I went to A&E with a pain in back when breathing in, the hospital put it down to unknown virus? but did do blood tests and X ray and could find nothing wrong, they also did a CT Scan and found something on my lung and I went back 10 weeks later for another CT Scan and was given the all clear. You might understand when I say that during this period I thought I had the big "C" and my feelings and emotions were all over the place,I do find that although every medical / Doctor has given me a clear bill of health, and I walk at least 30minutes a day (and more) and I am never out of breath, and in general I have never felt better.
In other posts I have read people describing that when they quit there is a felling of emptyness like there is something missing in their life, and that this feeling can be confussed with depression?
The other thing that I am sure I mentioned in other posts is the phlem as your lungs start to clear which the experts say start within a week of your quit? Well I am only now (8 Months) bringing up phlem??and I would not say that it is a lot.
The last visit to the doctor he arranged for me to have a Spiro?something lung test and this happens on Sept 5th but I don't know why I am getting this done as I don't have any breathing problem, I think the doctor is trying to prove that there is nothing wrong with me.
Again the point I am trying to make is how different people feel with their quit, and I do beleive that symptoms of stopping smoking , differ from people to people and I wish that members would give more details of themself on the site , like age,how long smoked.how many cigs smoked, because I am of the belief that when you are quiting it is better to talk to people who are of a similar age and similar smoking habits. Anyway time for me to end now and hope that I havn't depressed anyone.

Congratulations on your 8 months...almost nearing that penthouse!!
Think your totally right about everyone having different symptoms and it is always good to talk to someone who seems to be havign the same as you. I found that my quit is very similar to Skylarks...so we chat quit a bit....
I still cannot shake off this feeling of tiredness and lack of energy and yes, I think I do feel like something is missing still....and here I am 5 months down the road....
I wish I could be like some people on here and be full of energy...but it just ain't happening for me...I can't honestly say I feel any better (apart from not having a wheezy chest)....
Anyway, this is your time, so once again huge congratulations xx
I just want to say congratulations to you for staying quit this long. I started this quit on 25th January (7 months ago now) but slipped a few times so I'm currently only 54 days quit.
I've battled with the feelings of depression and emptiness all through. You know when they say reward yourself for each milestone achieved? I found that so hard at times because I couldn't think of anything I really wanted or would actually enjoy. I've worried a lot about losing my job because I can't seem to come up with ideas or generate much enthusiasm for it. And I worry more about my health now that I am no longer in denial than I ever did before.
I'd still rather be a non-smoker though. I'm financially better off, I have more energy, I have more confidence and I have more peace of mind.
You've shown great strength of character to remain quit through them challenging times, especially the health scare, so I admire your resolve!
This depression problem seems quite common, speaking for myself I would say my mental state through quitting is quite manic, quite often feeling very happy and positive, at other times just so low and worthless and always in the back of my mind the feeling of the 'void' and that missing ingredient (the cigarette)!
You are correct about peoples signatures, it would be good if there was pre-filled info where you could see the history of each member, I often wonder how much harder it is for someone to quit who has smoked all their life compared to someone like me who smoked for 12 years! Is there any difference at all!?
Anyway superb quit Danny and I wish you all the best for the future!
Hi Dannyboy, well done on nearly 9 months!! Thats great!
I am only on day 14 (yay!!) and reading posts like yours really inspire me and give me hope, so thanks!!
I think you are right in regards to saying that everyones quitting experience is different, and that everyone will have slightly different symptoms.
I know someone who has been quit for a year, and has never coughed up any rubbish, but i am already starting to cough it up!!
Oh, and i am 30 years old, i smoked roughly 20-25 a day from the age of 14-30 (except for the 2 times i was pregnant).
Good luck with the Spiro thing (your lung test),
Claire.
Hi Claire and thanks for your reply and before I go any further well done on 14 days quit, and thanks for your comments. I really beleive that I will never smoke again and just hope that I will be able to give you a hand up into the Penthouse next year, and I will watch for your future posts , and use this forum to support you through your quit because I would not be were I am today without the support of the many people on this site.
I went through the tiredness period as well and generally I feel better that I ever did before I stopped smoking.
Danny.

And 54 days is a great acheivment and well done, and I am really interested in your comment about your work and your lack of enthusiasm as I had this at one point and I can relate to your other comments about your health worry's.

Danny Boy how good is that 8 Months and going strong no blips or slips and you are sounding so strong and focussed, we are going to make to that sunny little Penthouse with all the posh bits to play in, must buy a batho for the hot tub before the summer sales are all gone, you take care and again well done you xxx
Well done on your 8 months Danny and i'm pleased the depression has lifted. I had a spirometry test a couple of months ago (16 months quit then) because of a cough I kept getting. I had no shortness of breath and could and can exercise well without issues. I am glad I had it though. It cleared me of any worries of lung damage and I almost feel now that i've been given a 'clean sheet' and can move forward with my quit with a sigh of relief. Look on it as a positive thing and good luck!!
