I have a night out arranged on Saturday, Tapas Bar followed by a few beers. I really want to prepare for this, but it concerns me, as I will only be on day four of my quit!
First Night Out: I have a night out arranged... - No Smoking Day
First Night Out
Hi there,
What concerns you the most? Is it triggers like food and alcohol? Or will you be mixing with smokers?
The smokers will be outside so its not a problem. But yes the feeling of having a big meal and a beer without following it with a ciggie is very scary indeed!
Well done for stopping you deserve a star.
You go through the eating and not having a cigarette every day and you are coping, I think the difference on Saturday will be the beer. Many quits have been spoiled by beer so take care that you stay in control and don't take that one fag. You will not see the others doing it as they are outside. You could maybe read some of the literature in our signatures before you go, there is lots on info on preparing yourself etc.
Good wishes.
Jackie
i know this may not be very practical but if you have some way of taking out your toothbrush and some toothpaste (in a jacket pocket perhaps). When the meal has finished and the smokers have gone outside, slip off to the bathroom and clean your teeth. I have been using this method at home and it gives you something to do with your hands. Once your breath is all freshened you will be less likely to want to smoke. Make sure you take a drink of water afterwards though or your beer won't taste too clever
Sharpes Extra Strong Mints. Might discourage you some.
Hi MrV,
The drink has been a trigger for many quitters, and one that has to be dealt with. It may be a scary thought just now, but once you get passt it, it will lose that scariness pretty quick. If you use the search facility on this forum you will find many many posts from people who have faced, and overcome, this situation. Reading them may prove helpful. If you are determined in your quit, you will find a way.

Beer = danger!
Hi Mr V,
It's a totally normal worry the "first time out" one, I cancelled a couple of nights out early on in my quit as I wasn't sure I'd cope in (well, outside) the pub without cigs. I had my first beer at home as a cautious test, it actually felt good to be allowing myself a beer and I didn't feel any huge increase in cravings so I had another, and another - then Wallop! I got whacked with a massive craving so I stopped drinking and left can number 4 in the fridge.
My first night out was tough too, the walk home, other smokers everything but you just have to get through it - it's another of those things that become easier with time. My advice would be to go out and enjoy, but be cautious about how many drinks you have. If you are cold turkey then take mints or toothpicks along if you use nrt then take your replacement weapon of choice along (the inhalator helped me when out drinking as you can use it as and when).
Good luck, enjoy the night and if the worst comes to the worst and you feel mega tempted then go home early I guess - better than going back to smoking!
