I'm on day four of non smoking after smoking solidly since the age of 17 (I am now 35), 20 a day without fail, even when ill. I've got patches AND gum, but the gum makes my chest feel really tight every time I chew it, plus a bit sicky. Is this normal? Have been having headaches etc, was expecting to feel brilliant but I am assuming it's just withdrawal symptoms. Anyway, I'm on day 4, had three large glasses of wine last night and had only minor cravings when wafts of smoke floated in the pub door. Feel pretty positive, although realise it's only the start of a long, hard slog!

Day 4 - patches and gum
Hi and well done to getting to Day 4 !! Be proud of yourself especially going to the pub !! - very brave ! I did not use patches or gum so cannot comment on that - however cold turkey I had dreadful headaches for the first few days and then they started to ease - that was clearly a withdrawal symptom - I only managed to Day 8 and caved in - oh boy have I regretted it - I also felt incredibly tired - which again is normal - now I realise though that no two people are the same and what one experiences doesn't mean everybody will. I am quitting again tomorrow with more knowledge mostly gleaned from this forum and a website called quitsmokingonline.com which has a wealth of information on it regarding dealing with the cravings and the real reason we get them - well worth a read !! I wish you luck and in my bizarre way I am really looking forward to tomorrow and no cigs !! - best - Peta

Hi
Well done on reaching Day 4.
I too have patches and gum. I'm on Day 9.
On 5th day, I was so busy until lunchtime that when I had a bad crave, I realised I hadn't put on my patch. I chewed a bit of the gum instead. I used another 4 bits of gum up to bedtime. I felt a slight rush of dizziness, rather than nausea, when I first used the gum. Perhaps because it's the sudden injection of nicotine rather than slow-release through the patch?? I've not used a patch since that 5th Day, down to 2/3 bits of gum and not had any more side effects. x
