Hi, I was curious about anyone else who’s had the BK virus in the past and how long it took to get rid of it from their system?

I had BK flare up once. The docs had me stop taking the CellCept and started Prednisone. Took about 6-8 weeks for it to go away. Got blood tests every week to track that it was going down. Hasn't come back in the 18 months since then. Good luck!

Did you get off the prednisone?

Yes. After about 2 months, BK was nil on the tests, so stopped the Prednisone and went back on the CellCept. Did the same routine when I had a UTI.

I got put on prednisone because of hernias I had to get repair and the sirolimus was making it so I was not healing I was to go back to prednisone after 3 months but my transplant doctor won't let me. Now I have several issues from being on prednisone besides snapping at my kids sometimes for no reason or others too.

Long term Prednisone does carry some issues. I have only been on it for short bursts. Prograf and CellCept are my standard meds. Good luck!

My transplant center when it shows up in my blood I was told they lower my anti rejection meds to make it go back dormant.

I had BK virus about 6 months after my transplant. They reduced my Cellcept (mycophenolate), and then I think eventually eliminated the Cellcept while increasing Tacrolimus. Unfortunately while the BK virus went away, I had a rejection (which was then successfully addressed) as the Cellcept was likely reduced too much. Everything ended up working out fine, but it might be helpful to be conservative in the Cellcept reduction at first.

Mine was discovered on feb 12th, they took me off cellcept completely and moved my advograf around a bit and it’s been coming down, but it’s been really slow since then, but my kidney function has gone back up from 32% in feb and now it’s around 53% and they’re happy with that because creatinine came right down a lot too, it just seems to be taking forever to leave
