Welcome to the club! Hair loss is very common with Tacrolimus, unfortunately. Some people experience it more so than others. I am 14 years post transplant, still on Tacrolimus, and struggle with thinning scalp hair. But I still do have a head of hair, just not thick hair. At one point, I had waist length long hair but have gradually worked with some great hairdressers whom have recommended shoulder length blunt cuts to add the illusion of volume. After chopping about 10" off, I did gain some volume, not thick hair, but the illusion of more hair. If you see small tufts growing from your crown, you are still growing hair, just not thick hair. I have become creative with headbands, scarves, and clips which have added a new dimension to my style so I can appreciate the bigger picture of celebrating life as a transplant recipient survivor. There are some benefits to Tacrolimus hair loss like never needing to shave your legs or underarms but it would be nice to maintain scalp hair selectively! Ask your doctor about taking Biotin to help give strength to your hair and promote hair growth. I have not had any luck with promising hair growth formulas and you must be careful about any chemicals/medications that could interact with your transplant medications. Use quality shampoos and conditioners, some volumizers may help but be sure they do not add to any additional tangling. Treat your hair gently, especially when wet since that can pull out hair unnecessarily. Comb or brush out from the bottom up, not directly from the scalp. I still get compliments on my hair, and even though you know the degree of hair loss you may be suffering, many others do not. It is the smile and person people see and your hair is not their focus. Hope this helps!
Thank you for your response
Ask your transplant team if you can take biotin , it’s working for me
Hello, have you had your thyroid levels checked? Your Drs should run a full thyroid panel, blood work. Yes Prograf/Tacro does cause some thinning of hair etc but its good to check the thyroid as well as it being hyper or hypo can cause problems with your hair. I am also on prograf/tacro and have had hair thinning and I also have bad thyroid issues for years. I get extensions to fill my hair out.The tape/glue ins. I still have plenty of underarm hair and leg hair unfortunately I wish you the best and hope your transplant last for many many more years to come!
