I receive my transplant on July 28th 2020 so it’s still very new!! Everything so far has been nearly perfect. Except i’m always hungry!!! Before transplant i was never really hungry, i ate because i had to. So right now i’m on 9mg of prednisone. But doctors want to bring in down to 5mg but very slowly so that my diease doesn’t flair up and i know that prednisone can make you have a bigger appetite. Ever since i’ve been home (about 2 1/2 weeks) i’ve been constantly hungry to the point where i find myself always eating something. I’ve been seeing the scale go up.
My question is: does this side effect ever go away? Does it get better as they bring the dose of prednisone down?
Thank you!!

I was exactly the same way eith hunger and yes it is because of the prednisolone. It is annoying to be hungry all the time but a necessary evil that will go away later.
It is very important that you follow the dose adjustment instructions because prednisolone has taken over your endogenous steroid production and you can go into shock if you reduce dose or stop taking it without medical supervision. For the time being, stock your refrigerator with healthy food items!
I remember only too well the effect of prednisone. Once they get your dose reduced you should do better. I know for me, it did help and the extreme hunger got better. Don't forget too that you are healthy now, with normal kidney function and are not a restricted diet. Food has taste and flavor. I think everyone does gain some weight at first.
I gained a lot of weight in my first year of transplant but l lost it the next year. The prednisone makes you eat more. Once they lower your dosage then you will be fine, try to some exercise or walk to keep the weight down.
