My good friend is 66 and has had CKF for quite a few years, He is at the #4 stage and holding. He hopes to get a transplant as he won't do dialysis.
I'm hoping to be considered as a donor, but don't know anything about the health requirements. My main questions are concerning my obesity and former status as a smoker and as an alcoholic. Would I really be considered at all or will I be knocked off immediately?
We have a video conference next week; our first appt with the donor team in our town.
Thank you.

Hi - as I learned going through the living donor process, each transplant program's requirements vary. The team wants you to be as healthy as possible. If weight is a concern, I'd start now to lose what pounds you can with a healthy diet and exercise. Otherwise, I'd follow the guidance of the donor team. If there are health concerns past or present, they'll talk you through what you can do - if anything.
Wonderful of you to want to be a donor!! Tarheel8082 is correct with all that was stated. Just want to add that there is a program called RISC, offered by many centers, to help with weight loss for FREE to potential donors. If you need more information, feel free to reach back out to me.
