BMI and Countries that allow donation with mental illness

I am a 40 year old male with a current BMI of 33 but I have never been on a diet or exercised (I used to in the Army but that was 20 years ago). I think if I started I can get my BMI under 30 by working on my weight but I doubt I can get it much lower than 28 as I am just built heavy. Even when I was in the Army and was a exercise nut I never achieved under 26 BMI and I ate healthy back then.

If I work on my weight how long would it take for my body to expel any toxins and get healthy enough to donate?

I also have a major mental illness but am financially stable with good income. I know this may make it hard to donate in the US but how about other countries like EU, Australia and Canada (other countries in Europe just not those in the EU). I am more than willing to cover my own expenses and not looking for any type of financial support for travel expenses and hotels during my travel to a country that will allow me to.

I also have had high blood pressure since I was a teenager but it has always been managed with normal blood pressure medicine. Will this be an issue?

Thanks for any information.

If it is possible with what I stated above does anyone have a safe link on the types of foods I should begin eating to help in the donor process?

I honestly think high blood pressure might be your biggest barrier. Maybe some others can weigh in? (Lol)

As an undirected donor I think you'll encounter more resistance. Perhaps if you were to find someone you'd have better luck? Search #shareyourspare on Instagram and you'll find lots of people in need.

Thank you for even caring enough to post and ask your questions, and share your situation!! I agree with "laurenduvall" on the 2 items reported: high blood pressure and not being a directed donor on your biggest barriers.

I would think the best course of action would be to find your local transplant center, set up a meeting with the counselor/social worker and discuss your desire and questions. They would best be able to guide you.

Just a note -- there aren't special foods to eat to better your ability to become a kidney donor - overall general good health/weight, etc... is what's important!

Best of luck to you!
