Hi all, I started hemo dialysis last year (2016) the week of Thanksgiving, so not quite a year yet. So far it is going good. This is my first post here. I would like to learn about eating less phosphorus high foods--I'm finding it a little tough to remember to carefully read labels. Anyone have any helpful advice?

Hi Mnsandy I'm new here too just did my first post an hour ago. I've been on dialysis 21/2 yrs now best thing I could tell you for phosphorus is to stay away from processed foods eat fresh veggies cook your own food and if u eat out eat in moderation and leave ur binders where vet u eat so u don't forget good luck all the best

Hi,

Phosphorus isn't to be found on many or any labels, so it's hard unless you have a breakdown. If you aren't aware, go to davita.com and on their main page along the blue menu bar they have a drop-down menu for recipes. You can pick up ideas for all seasons and times of day and each one has a breakdown that gives you the phosphorus. I've not found this information anywhere else. I met with a Renal Dietitian a few weeks ago and I have a list of foods that are high in phosphorus.

This is a partial list: cheese, milk and soymilk, eggnog, milkshakes, hot chocolate, pudding, yogurt, ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, frozen yogurt, custard, flan, whole grains, bread, cereals, cornbread, baking soda, baking powder, pancakes, waffles, muffins, cake, avocado, biscuits, beans, peas, corn tortilla, brown rice, wild rice, rice mixes, coconut, nuts, nut butter, seeds, dried fruit, dark-colored sodas, beer, chocolate, pizza (ouch), organ meats and sardines/mackerel. Hope that is a help for you.
