Drop in eGFR from 78 in Nov 2023 to now 53 ( normal value in Australia > 89. Huge drop. GP ordered renal US yesterday. This is a massive drop & looks like I now have moderate CKD. If it’s dropping that quickly I’m doomed !.

Hi Cocodaisey,

This is very concerning.

A significant drop in eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) over a short period of time is indeed concerning and should be promptly investigated. However, it's important not to jump to conclusions before a thorough evaluation is done. Here are some steps you can take:

1. **Follow Up with Your GP**: Make sure to follow up with your general practitioner (GP) to discuss the results and next steps. They may refer you to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) for further evaluation.

2. **Renal Ultrasound**: The renal ultrasound ordered by your GP is a crucial step. This imaging test can help identify any structural abnormalities in the kidneys, such as blockages, cysts, or tumors, that might be contributing to the decline in kidney function.

3. **Review Medications and Supplements**: Certain medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, can affect kidney function. Review all medications and supplements you are taking with your GP to identify any potential nephrotoxic agents.

4. **Hydration and Diet**: Ensure you are adequately hydrated and consuming a kidney-friendly diet. Limiting salt, potassium, and protein intake might be recommended, but consult with your GP or a dietitian for personalized advice.

5. **Control Underlying Conditions**: Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune diseases can contribute to kidney damage. Ensuring these conditions are well-managed is crucial.

6. **Avoid Nephrotoxic Substances**: Avoid substances that can harm the kidneys, such as NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), contrast dyes used in some imaging tests, and certain herbal supplements.

7. **Repeat Testing**: Sometimes, a single abnormal test result might not reflect the true kidney function due to temporary factors like dehydration, acute illness, or lab error. Repeat testing can provide a clearer picture of your kidney health.

8. **Lifestyle Modifications**: Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help preserve kidney function. This includes regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and limiting alcohol intake.

9. **Monitor Symptoms**: Be aware of any symptoms that could indicate worsening kidney function, such as swelling in the legs or ankles, changes in urination, fatigue, or shortness of breath, and report them to your doctor.

It’s understandable to feel anxious about such a significant change in your eGFR, but taking proactive steps and working closely with your healthcare team can help manage the situation effectively.

I agree with everything WinJ3 said! My egfr went from 52 May 8th to 42 on July 1st. I freaked out! I was able to pinpoint mine to my foot surgery on May 15th. I probably wasn’t hydrated enough. I have been working on getting my number back up. I have been drinking 1 1/2 liters of water a day, watching my sodium, taking my blood pressure, (I take 30 mg lisinopril for high blood pressure) several times a day, and walking. I am a 71 year old woman, approximately 120 lbs.. I had another bloodwork done July 30th and it was at 44. I know it’s only 2 numbers higher but I am encouraged and will keep with the program and will retest Sept. 1st. I was getting tested every 3 months but now will get tested every month. You are smart to get this checked out!
