hi,

Just wondering how you handle special events, like a wedding reception and a vacation, on Kidney diet. Thanks

I think it would depend on where I was at on the spectrum. But, as for now, for me, at an event I would just eat whatever was there.. trying to not overdo on the real bad stuff. Vacation same but would try to be better, like packing healthy snack food.s

Sorry to be little bit rude but your disease is not having holiday wedding or celebration. It's hard I know but it's what it's. There's no special approach for special occasions. Telling this much depends from your stage and from how you want manage yourself. In the end it's you life. When you have the best advice it's your decision to take it or leave it. Just for example I saw lot of people with diabets eating like they had not. Great respect always.

Indeed. I don't think folks actually get it. I do my level best to be very diligent about my food and management of my diabetes and ckd yet go to some events and hear folks say they also have diabetes and they are usually careful - as they start in on yet another piece of pie or cake... Yea right.

It can be difficult to attend an event where they do not have a lot of the food choices you want. Weddings are hard because you can't really have a say in what you are getting. This is one time you want to be prepared and have something before you go incase...Last wedding I went to, they had tons of meats and stuff I did not eat. I asked the wait staff if I could have a larger salad and they accommodated me. If you are going somewhere, like family meals, I always offer to bring something I can eat. Since my husband's family are meat eaters, I bring a tossed salad. I have often ended up eating only that, which is fine. Going on vacation is not an excuse to bomb the diet. But it can be hard to get exactly what you want. You have to be wise. For example, if you are not eating fish and shellfish, don't go to a seafood restaurant. Don't expect chicken at a burger place. Most higher end restaurants will prepare food you can enjoy. McD's...not so much. Be prepared to bring or have foods to snack on in the room like fruits. Grapes and cherries are a good snack. Popcorn, if your room have a microwave, is great but stay away from processed sugared popcorn. Order salads with dressing on the side. But it is vacation, so stressing on food is not what you should do. Be prepared and stick to what you know is good for you. I admit, when my family is on vacation, we do go to one ice cream shop and have a cone. It is the best in the world, and one is not going to kill me. And the enjoyment of my family savoring the treat is well worth it. Last piece of advice: make sure you are drinking water. It is easy to not when you are doing different things like touring. The food you will have at restaurants will just naturally have more salt than you are used to, so you need to drink water to help combat that.

When I go out to eat at a restaurant, I make adjustments to my diet. I track my diet and plan on food selection and portion control. There are apps for tracking diet.

obsession is as, if not more dangerous that that extra small piece of cake.. stress releases cortisol and that is bad bad bad..regarding dibetes and the cake.. that depends upon wheather you are on orals or insulin.. insulin is freedom..if you know you are going to over do on carbs.. take some extra humalog..that is the way young type one diabetics are taught.. if you are going to exercise you take less...putting yurself in a box will not help.. moderation is the key.. how many weddings do you go to...a small piece of meat on your salad will not alter your numbers.. a week of stakes every night might.. life is to be enjoyed. we have enough to stress about..have fun a just dont over do..and dance up a storm....

On a vacation, if possible, I take as much as my own non-perishable kidney-friendly food; visiting friends I take my own coffee and non-fat milk (due to gut issues) and at restaurants the first thing I ask for is a jug of water.

When eating out, I stick to mostly salads.
