If you have protein do you automatically have CKD?
The short answer is yes. And your risk for death is pretty high as well too.
Thanks so much for sharing this, Roxanne! Best video I've ever seen on protein in urine.
Just to add If the value is higher than 300mg/dl spot test then it may mean kidney damage. There are other conditions that causes protein in urine including pregnancy that are not CKD. There are some types of CKD that does not have protein in urine as well. Such as benign CKD Just FYI for most other who misunderstand there are many types of CKD and the stages are the level of damage and not the types of CKD . Types such as hypertensive nephrosclerosis Glomerulonephritis IgA Nephropathy etc kidneyfund.org/all-about-ki...
In your 1st sentence, are you referring to PCR and, if so, do you mean 300mg/g?
My mum's latest test indicates 44.4 mg/mmol. Her tot protein is 0.08 g/l and urine creatinine 1800 umol/l so giving 393 mg/g via mdcalc.com/urinary-protein-... and 24h = 0.4g (0.44 stated on test results).
I am in US so yes it is PCR protein but we mesure mg/dl if I am not wrong mmol is 16.6? We also use protein creatine ratio to determine failure if it is less than 10 or over 20 you should ask your Dr if she needs to see a Nephrologist especially if she is diagnosed with stage 4 and above or if egfr less than 60 for 3 months and or physical kidney damage
As you'll note from my response 2h ago to the OP, mum's urine test data are over normal lab range (and figs in your reply just now) but:
1. Below the level (in mg/g) in the video
2. Not of concern to the nephro she's had 5y
Shes stage 3, eGFR latest 76 following steady rise from 36 post-nephrectomy 2017
I am following US standards so you should talk to your Dr about her results it may be different because of the different metric also different labs have different normal range.
However if her egfr is still at 76 stage 2 in that case Nephrologist will not look into it until it goes below 60 for 3 months or they discovered physical kidney damage
Also with 1 kidney the egfr is normally ok too
Talk to your Dr
Thanks for the advice but it doesnt really work like that here in UK. Her 5-yr nephrologist is secondary care and her GP (doctor) is primary so just refers to the nephro - who is delighted with mum's test results and stated he doesnt believe she will ever have a serious urine protein problem, as I say.
Despite eGFR increasing to 76, none of the medics has "updated" her to stage 2.
At 44.4mg/mmol , her PCR is > labs "normal" range of 0-14 . New test is imminent.
An excellent video, hope you send follow-up (treatment) if/when available.
My mum's PCR 10m ago was 44.4 nm/mmol which I estimate = 393 mg/g (see my reply to sparkie88) so thankfully below the 500 limit in the video.
But Im surprised her nephro believes there will NEVER be an issue since it is increasing at a high rate so the above limit appears not too far away. He is retesting in a couple of weeks.
Note: Urinalysis strip consistently indicates Negative (?) and latest UACR (~2y ago) was 8.97 mg/mmol which I believe is Normal for NHS according to figs reported on here last Oct by Skeptix (what happened to him? although >2x top of N range in NHS labs.

Thanks for this which Ive finally just watched. The best thing for me about it (in fact both videos) is the diet & wellbeing focus with just a short deviation into drugs. Good to know they are there, if needed, but we dont believe she's at that stage re her proteinuria - and her nephro went on record a couple of weeks ago saying she will NEVER be!
