In a bit of a quandry

Hello - if you were me would you concentrate more on keeping your kidneys going without dialysis and all of the special diets or would you spend good money on going to a sleeping pill detox so you could sleep naturally at night. I suffer with both and it is making me very depressed. I may not be allowed to do a detox because of the anxiety involved which I have enough of anyway. Also they sometimes use medication which is not suitable. I think this is why my eating plans are all over the place because I am so stressed out with it all. I will have to choose one to concentrate on but leaving one alone will have serious health repercussions for me. I would love to have some advice on what to do because if I look at anymore rehab/kidney info on line I think I shall lose it. Thanks for reading.

Well Im wondering what rehab means. Like, an actual facility stay? I had to get off opioids on my own :-(. Not the same, but really, really awful after using methadone 10 years for pain. 6 weeks of awfulness. But it was free :-) Sleeping meds were not difficult to stop for me but then my circadian rhythms been off for decades and not much to do about it…

I would say concentrate on keeping off dialysis. I was on sleeping pills for several years, and my dr just took me off "cold turkey" so I resorted to Tylenol PM. had to stop those too because it dried up my tongue and throat too much

Your total medical profile is needed to make this assessment including comorbidities, the stage of your disease, medications and lifestyle. You are the only one who can give dietary changes a chance. For most patients, (not all), dialysis is a timed death sentence. If you must go on a machine, opt for PD so you can treat at home. IMHO, if the quality of life does not exist, there is no reason to persist. Do not accept major medical advice without a second opinion.

Your advice on dialysis is spot on..To some CKD patients, especially in the third world countries, like where I live, dialysis is a timed death sentence...Just 2 weeks ago, have heard more than 4 patients who succumbed to CKD while undergoing dialysis..I think we should have both short term and long term goals (short term goal to stop disease progression and long term goal to prevent dialyy)

Have you been to see a nutritionist or dietician? I'm fairly recently diagnosised at stage 3 ckd and had been on a keto diet before then. My doc feels that since keto is the only way I've been successful that I should be on a modified keto plan and she has me working with a nutritionist to do this. In the short time I've had CKD, I've learned that some doctors has not had anything to do with it since med school. My recommendation is to work with the doc treating your CKD and a nutritionist to help use diet and medication to help keep your CKD from progressing

Hang in there. I think most of us are planning to stay off machine as long as possible and we are probably all with you on the anxiety...hang in there. I just got back from a short bike ride. Just keep living.
