Doctor explained and apologized through receptionist about the “prison” question

Thank you all for the kind replies. I’ll just put a new post here to update what happened to that “ prison question” incident.

I was supposed to come back in 48 hours to that doctor to check my TB skin test, but I so didn’t want to do that. After some thinking, I called the office and told the receptionist about my feeling and said I want cancel the appointment.

Later that day the receptionist called and explained what the doctor really meant is to ask wether I have ever worked in a prison. ( I m pretty sure I didn’t hear the word “work” from the doctor). She said the doctor is very sorry if it hurt my feeling and he could call and explain it to me himself if I want. ……

Anyway, I didn’t want to spend too much time on this matter and simply cancelled my appointment, because I would feel awkward to see him again, which means I will need to do another needle with my future new family doctor. Luckily it’s a very small needle, lol.

I’m moving at the end of this month so I would need to find a new family doctor anyway.

Thank you again for your kind replies.

once you do a tb test, your doctor is required to provide you with the proof of the reading. Did you not get that far?

No, I just got the injection, and was told to come back in 48 hours, which I didn’t do.

You could ask them to send the results to you. Nice to know they reached out to you.

Great move...his explanation is still kind of a nothing burger...it is still rather insulting even if he added the word "work" in there...With-in those 48 hours of TB test, did the injection site raise up, become red or swell up and start that way ?....If not, thats a negative

Glad you’re getting a new doctor. It’s an awkward situation all around.

I'd complete the follow-up visit and let the nurse or Dr. check the site to record in your record if the test was + or -. There's no need for another and your insurance may not pay for it unless you have a history of a + test and needed it redone.

Please don't be embarrassed, he won't even think about it. Since you are uncomfortable it's good you'll be finding a new Dr. for future care, but I'd still finish up this test. It's probably too late though by the time the office opens again to have them check it.

I doubt he meant work, because he would have said worked or been an inmate as they ask with COVID. I wouldn't have given it a second thought myself, but I know everyone is different. I'm sorry it made you feel badly.

A good option for a free test and readout is to simply visit a county (public) health service. They do lots of them - one simply walks in and returns in a few days for a readout. Those are generally free. Or one can simply go a facility such as Labcorp, pay a small amount of money, get the test and have it sent to where it needs to go. No doctor's order needed. Labcorp lists theTB skin test here: labcorp.com/help/patient-te.... (They offer many other tests too that don't require physician involvement.) Labcorp, and others like them, are located everywhere.

Thank you Sophie, I’ll find a new doctor to finish the test. I did x ray and ct , they are both fine, so I’m not worried
