My Mom 88 yrs old is in the hospital they did a CTScan on her with barium??

She is diabetic2, has a 23 GFR, congestive heart disease ,high bloodpressure

is this drink before the test a harmful contrast for her kidneys? She came in with water on the legs,

{water blisters) They found water on her lungs as well and had it drained. They gave her intravenous Lasik. How dangerous are all the Ct Scans they are now doing?

They claim the pathologist found some type of cancer cell in the water drained. They also do not believe she is a diabetic because she not on a blood sugar med.

She controls her sugar through herbs for years now. They do take her numbers regular to check levels however. Any advice concerned daughter with Mom in Florida. The oncoloogist said they did not use contrast but she drank two bottle of that white stuff. (one hour apart, with no food for 8 hours) Please advise! They did mention her GFR lowered afterwards but I'm not able to get any more info on the results. - My brother and sister law are controlling my access to nurse station information. (even though my mom legally signed paper naming me as a health surrogate on her behalf.

I've included an article about contrast dye and the kidneys. I hope this helps you. If you still have any doubts ask her physician.

Hi Gisella8. You refer to your mother drinking two bottles of "white stuff". If the "white stuff" is barium contrast, it's generally not harmful to kidneys. My husband who still has kidney function even though he's on dialysis, has had procedures done involving contrasts. They will either use a contrast not damaging to kidneys or, if there is no alternative, will limit the amount given. But it's always a good idea to mention health concerns with contrasts to everyone, including the anesthesiologists. With regard to Lasix, that treatment is used to treat congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and renal disease etc. by draining off excess fluid. That generally makes a person more comfortable while helping with body performance. It's wonderful that your mom controls her diabetes naturally. If her sugars stay in the normal range, she's doing well with it. I truly hope your mother feels better soon!

Thanks Darlenia! appreciate your advice on that. She is waiting now to find out whether they are going to do a kidney drainage . She has one kidney not functioning and one with a blockage. The GFR now is 20 still waiting on pathology for the thyroid and pancreas biopsy's She feels in great spirits and i'm learning so much from this website and other sites people suggest. Wishing you the Best Thanks Again!

I have Graves Disease which causes Hyperthyroidism and can not have contrast dyes as they could affect my thyroid. Since I'm in remission I'd like to stay that way. My nephrologist also is against contrast.
