Is there a qualifying rule of thumb for FMLA or short-term disability given a GFR score?
I'm a 48 yo male who broke the 60 barrier in the past year with five tests scores of 56, 65, 62, 31, and 57. No treatment to date. I just got a nephrologist due to the 31 score.
Any FMLA or short-term disability success or horror stories? I'm in a sedentary job (software engineer). I like my job and want to keep it. My employer expects a lot. And my performance has tanked in the last year due to, I think, CKD.
I'd like to take some time off and recharge. I'd like to get my weight under control and just check-out for a while mentally. The goal is to take a few months, get my health in order, and return. I'm not sure of a long-term plan.

FMLA is something to protect your job. Does not guarantee you will come back to the exact same job, however, just A job. You need a doctor to agree for the need. At Stage 2, and sometimes 3a, I am not sure the nephrologist would agree to that. There has to be signifigant reasons for the use of FLMA. This is what it says, " a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job;" I am not sure why the GFR you are at would imped your ability to do your sedentary job. Many people at this stage are not even aware they have CKD because there are no symptoms. Not trying to be nasty or anything, but unless there is more going on medically, I would re-evaluate the situation. Many doctors do not even consult at the stage you are at. Maybe talking to the nephrologist will explain what you can do to feel better, like eating better, exercise and drinking sufficient water.
Short term disability is not an avenue I think you can qualify for either.
It sounds like you need a break from the job but unless you have vacation time, or can take a leave, I do not think FLMA will get you time off. You need to realize there are people who are Stage 4 and 5 who work every day.
In order to qualify for FMLA or any type of disability, your physician must sign the required forms. It is best to speak with your physician regarding this issue. In the alternative, do you have any vacation Hours that you might be able to use? Best wishes!
I agree with what the others have said. Do you have the option of taking a leave of absence with your job? Of do, that may be the best option. It would assure a return to your current job, etc.
