I can provide you with a list of foods to avoid as they are high in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium. Your specific meal plan should be designed by you and a renal dietitian. Speak to your nephrologist for a referral and bring all of your labs with you for as long as you have them and help the RD develop what works for you. It can be vegetarian, vegan or some non-harmful animal protein.

Here are some foods.

HIGH IN POTASSIUM

milk, milkshakes, hot chocolate, eggnog, ice cream/sherbet, frozen yogurt, pudding, yogurt, custard, molasses/sorghum, dried fruit, apricots, bananas, honeydew, orange and prune juice, kiwi, oranges, nectarines, nuts, seeds, whole grain/bran cereal, sports drinks, artichoke avocado, fresh beets, Brussel sprouts, dried beans, and peas, greens and spinach, wax beans, okra, potatoes (if leeched first), pumpkin, winter squash, tomatoes, tomato products

HIGH IN PHOSPHORUS

cheese, milk, and soymilk, eggnog, milkshakes, hot chocolate, pudding, yogurt, custard, flan, ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, frozen yogurt, whole grain, bread, cereals, baking soda, baking powder, pancakes, waffles, muffins, cake, cornbread, avocado, biscuits, beans, peas, (except green/was beans) corn tortilla, brown/wild rice, and rice mixes, coconut, nuts, nut butter, seeds, dried fruit, dark-colored sodas, beer, chocolate, pizza, organ meats, sardines, mackerel

HIGH IN SODIUM

lunch meats, salt, and seasoned salt, tacos, sausage, sauerkraut, ham, cured meats, salted nuts, cheese, cottage cheese, condiments, hot dogs, bacon, pickled foods, canned foods, canned soup and salted crackers, pizza, frozen dinners, sauces, dressings, chips, pretzels,

OTHER FOODS TO AVOID

red meats, dark pork, bison,

Poultry, fish, and white meat pork can be used to reach your daily protein intake. Speak to your nephrologist and renal dietitian for your daily limits. A regular-sized egg will usually count as 1 oz. of your daily protein.

Canned foods of any type. Too much sodium unless you drain the food and wash thoroughly first. Grapefruit, Artificial sweeteners (try Stevia).

Your specific preferences and needs should be discussed with the RD to be able to put together a meal plan you can work into your lifestyle changes.

Mr. Kidney's answer is quite complete. For simple answer, anything that is highly processed is bad for kidneys......frozen dinners, fast foods, things with preservatives, salted foods like BBQ rubs, fried chicken..... not good. Good food depends on your needs but whole foods, veggies and low fat protein.... good.

Hi I just purchased a book that has tables of the nutrient values in foods and only that. It ‘s title is “Health and Nutrition Fat, Carb and calorie counter,” US Edition by Reciprocity. I have been told to keep Potassium, Phosphorus, Sodium and Protein to a minimum. I was told anything that had a mother, including eggs, only one time a day. I too would like to find some go to, safe foods for CKD sufferers. The problem is everything is prepared differently, and portion size is important. Homemade is safest to eliminate sodium, but many healthy items are off limits because the other nutrients are so high. I went to a regular dietician who Is monitoring my bloodwork and told me no more than 1500mgs of these nutrients and 1000 of Sodium. I want to find a renal dietician though. My last GFR was 23. I have been down to 19. Good luck

Everyone else gave good answers. A lot of what you eat will depend on your own specific kidney disease. Like for me I don't have to watch my Potassium but I do just to be safe. I half everything that is considered high in something I should avoid. Except for dairy I don't dairy hardly at all anymore. Meat a few times a week but in 3 to 4 oz serving. Salt of course must be limited for all of us.

I’m in a different situation. I was recently diagnosed with Barrett esophagus. It’s a precancerous to esophageal cancer. The renal diet is completely opposite of the suggested diet for my esophagus. Which direction do I go? Total renal that takes away everything from the Barrett’s diet or the precancerous diet that could potentially help this not to turn into cancer? Or stay the course I’m on and cut back on some things for my kidneys and replace what I should be eating for my kidneys with some of the stuff for the Barrett’s? Barrett diet has a lot of whole grain, rice, beans etc. Curious what some of you would do. I’m still at the beginning of this process with my kidney. It is a little disconcerting when I have a referral for an MRI with the reason to evaluate lesions on my spine and kidney failure. I don’t think any of us are ready to see/hear that.
