Is there anyone with CKD and still use Gaviscon for gastri acid regurgitation? I'd like to know anyone has side effect by doing this.

Hello Leefrank,

I have always used Gaviscon for the occasional indigestional discomfort I experienced, but have had no side effects I am aware of. Incidentally, since my CKD stage 3 diagnosis over 3 years ago, when I started to eat a low-potassium, kidney-friendly diet, I very seldom have to use it. I do not think this is a coincidence, once I had researched and adopted the diet my stomach accepted it and I have always felt more comfortable. An added bonus is that over this time I have lost 3 stone (42lbs.) in weight and I feel great for my age, nearly 78!

You have not said whether you are now having problems using it, or have been told not to use it. In either case, I would speak to your pharmacist or doctor about what is best for you to take as I know that some over-the-counter remedies can be harmful for those of us with CKD. Best wishes, Curleytop1.

The most important things to consider is the mineral containt in this medication. Need some expert to verify the compatibility to the kidney functioning.

I think you should talk to your nephrologist about Gaviscon. The idea behind Gaviscon was that it would float on the top of the fluids in your stomach and if you regurgitate into your esophagus it would not burn your tissues because the foam neutralizes the acids. The main ingredients of Gaviscon are: sodium alginate; sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogencarbonate); and. calcium carbonate. Sodium Bicarbonate reacts with stomach acid to bubble and make a foam. I am in stage 4 and I take Sodium Bicarbonate tablets 650 mg 4 per day. So your doctor should know how many your are using, maybe in the future.
