You need to ask your nephrologist for a referral to see a Renal Dietitian. Bring your lab results for as far back as you have them and let the RD develop a kidney-friendly meal plan designed just for you. If you need further assistance in coming up with foods to eat try going to davita.com and look at their drop down menu under Recipes. They have a wide variety of meals that give you the full breakdown on things like sodium, potassium, phosphorous, protein, calcium, as well as calories and with that information, you can make additional adjustments to suit your needs.

When you speak to your nephrologist, also ask about increasing your exercise regimen to help you. Diet alone will not be enough. You may have to make adjustments to what you can do but you have to work daily on some physical activity.

Look at all of your medications and make sure the dosages are not counterproductive to CKD. I use drugs.com to help with this. Anything that is listed as a caution, contact the prescribing physician and see if there is a less harmful medication or a different dosage to help. This includes all supplements and any OTC items you take. Check to see what the ingredients are of each supplement and be sure you know what's inside each one.

Your nephrologist should also be able to give you a general idea as to the Anemia. You can ask about an Iron supplement and be sure your physicians monitor your blood labs frequently. For your immediate needs, go back to davita.com and run a search there for Anemia and Chronic Kidney Disease. There is an excellent article and provides you with a lot of additional information on how to be proactive and deal with the Anemia.

Great information Mr Kidney. I was diagnosed at 3b and find that diet and prescribed exercise are important. I also utilize Davita for menu and diet tracking. I found that Kidney class given by Davita to be helpful.

Great reminder OC. I didn't mention to lucipeE2 about the class...so, also at the davita.com site you can register for a free 90-minute Kidney Smart class taught by knowledgeable kidney specialists. The classes are frequent and you can almost always find one in your area. If you are not in the USA you can go to kidneyschool.org/mods and view each of the modules and learn what you need to know about CKD. It's a good tool to learn the basics and from there you can branch out your personal research from there and also come up with some excellent questions to ask at your next doctor's appointment.

Thank you Mr Kidney. You seem to have a lot of knowledge on Kidney Disease. I’m in the process of changing Nepholgists and would love to talk with you as I’m in the middle of waiting for some tests to come back. Thank you for your concern.

Learn all you can by researching and you can gain the knowledge you need to be your own best advocate and help others as well. There are a lot of others on this site that will share their thoughts and stories and if you remember that "one size doesn't fit all" you will figure out how to adjust meals, watch your medications, put together a strong Care Team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, kidney knowledgeable professionals, and others with CKD and an exercise regimen that works for you can hopefully put off dialysis for a long time.
