Give birth at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

I would like to know if there is any service where I can leave my 3 year old while I am having my baby in this hospital. Me, my husband and my son just move to this county 2 months ago and we don't know anyone here. If this service doesn't exist i would have to give birth alone because my husband will have to stay with our son.

Hi, this must be a bit of a lonely time for you and it's a shame that you had to come to live in UK when you really need the extra help of family and friends at home during pregnancy.

Unfortunately I don't know of any private facilities that offer what you are looking for. In cases of real need, social services would be involved in placing a child who had no-one else to care for him/her, but that's only when there is literally no-one. With your husband available, I guess they would expect him to do the child care. I think the best thing for you to do would be to talk to the midwife who is caring for you ante-natally and explain your problem. That way, if it's not possible for your husband to be present you might get some extra support from whatever maternity department you will be using.

It does quite often happen that dads or birthing partners don't get there in time, so you wouldn't be the first lady to be in this predicament. But you will have all the help and support you need from your maternity department, and, if all goes well, will be discharged with your baby very soon after giving birth, so that you can rejoin your family quickly.
