How does the illness certificate work?
I know that for the first 7 days of illness I can leave a completed self -certification to our medical practice office, but for more I need a GP certificate, isn't it?
In the case of high fever, how many days pass before you have an appointment with the GP?

Like anyone, you need go see a doctor and DWP, are you sick or are you trying to swing the lead, is that all you can think about "free money" it doesn't work like that, go to your local DWP.
Yes, you are fine self certifying for seven days, and that is often enough for most common illnesses, even flu, as a doctor would usually consider you well enough to go back to work after that. But if you are really still suffering from something and feel you can't return, call your GP surgery in the early morning and ask for an urgent appointment (or triage if that's how it goes at your surgery), and explain, when asked, that you now need to discuss your need for a follow-on doctor's certificate.
And if it's something more serious, bring up the topic when you first consult your GP. You'll still be asked to self-certify for the first 7 days, but your GP will then be standing by to issue an ongoing certificate.
