Hi everyone!
In 2020, I slipped a disc in my back and I have been left with a virtually unusable left leg. I have no sensation or function below mid-thigh and use a wheelchair or crutches and a KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthosis - basically a full leg brace which locks at the knee to allow me to be weight bearing) to get around.
I am seriously considering an elective above-knee amputation. Now, I have a background in operating theatres and have scrubbed in for many an amputation, so I fully understand the ins and outs of the operation itself.
I'm looking for people who have possibly had the same or similar situation. How did the doctor react when you approached them about this? Has having the amputation changed your situation for the better? Would you recommend it?
I just want some of my life back! My niece is 18 months old and can't understand why I can't hold her hand when we go to the park. If there is the slightest chance that I might be able to walk with a prosthetic and without crutches, I really want to take the chance.
I know that there is also a chance that I wouldn't be able to use a prosthetic, but I still think that I would be better off in that situation than what I am dealing with now.
Just looking for opinions really! Thanks for reading!
