Memory problem and sleepiness on gabapentin?

Hi there

I take gabapentin three times a day, 400mg in the morning, 400mg in the afternoon, and 600mg at night. It helps me with a number of things, including spasticity from cerebral palsy, the related pain from that, depression and anxiety.

I had a baclofen pump implanted in 2016 and since then, I have been so sleepy after both the morning and afternoon doses of gabapentin. It's so frustrating, because I'm a highly motivated active person and I'm just about reaching the end of my tether. I have tried to reduce it, but feel incredibly trapped, because my anxiety increases as soon as I try to change the dose, plus I need it for the pain level and spasticity, the baclofen pump has been a real help, but it hasn't actually been as much help as it could be, and I can't increase that anymore because it is affecting other parts of my body too much if it's too high.

I can understand it making me sleepy during the day, but surely it would help me more at night when the dose is higher. By 5 or 6, I'm wide awake. The night dose barely touches me. The pump is also higher at night, so I can't understand why this is the case.

I don't suppose there are many people here who have the pump and gabapentin, but if you have either and have these symptoms, I would be most grateful to hear from you.

My other issue is my memory. I find it so difficult to retain information these days, even what I have watched just minutes after the end of the film. (That has only happened to me once before thankfully), but I find it incredibly difficult to remember things and I wondered if this could be connected to the meds as well.

Thank you so much for reading my post, just that in itself is so much appreciated.😊

I know when I took gabapentin I would just drop off to sleep at anytime. And yes my memory and thinking was getting bad that's why I weaned myself off. I take topomax now. I was on gabapentin for my pheriphal nuerophathy. I do have a pain pump it has duladid and Bupvacain in it. The only medication I cannot tolerate with my pain medication in my pump or when I was on methadone was any type of muscle relaxer which Baclofen is one of them. You need to consult with your physician and explain your symptoms they're many different medications that they can try not just the gabapentin. I can't take Cymbalta or lyrica either both cause dementia type of problems couldn't even drive. It was very scary. Hope you find some answers. Just be careful. I was on some muscle relaxers that was lowering my blood pressure and I didn't know It and it cause me to pass out while I was driving I flipped my truck and totalled it. I was very lucky I wasn't hurt really bad. So the medication making you sleepy and if you get behind the wheel is like driving drunk. Be careful. Hugs

Hi Liz_2018

Thanks so much for your reply, I'm sorry it's taken me this long to get back to you.

I don't drive anymore so that's fine, and having done some research, I have discovered some information that could be related to the suspected deja vu seizures I am experiencing. So it may not even be as a result of gabapentin that im having such bad memory problems. I am waiting to see a neurologist at the moment.

Thanks so much for your kindness.

Hugs.

I hope everything works out for you. I know medication can do all kind of things to people it would be nice not to have to depend on them. And the new meds are really scary some of the side effects are worse than what the medication is suppose to be treating. Let me know what you find out from your neurologist if you don't mind.

Hug's, Liz
