Morning back stiffness

For the last 3 months or so I have been waking up in the morning with a siezed feeling in my lumbar area on my right hand side. My mattress is only 3 years old and appears in good condition, I have turned the mattress over and it has made no difference. Once I am out of bed and start moving the pain/stiffness quickly goes away. Yes I am over weight but been the same weight for many years so no sudden change. Not sure if I should talk to my doctor. The only thing I have done differently is I have started taking Statins, but I left them off for a few days and although the pain stiffness didn't seem as bad it was hard to tell if the statin was the cause. I am on a very low Statin dose anyway. If I get an early night and in bed for longer hours it is worse. I am a male age 59. Thanks for reading and appetiate any replies.

Probably not much help but I get similar. Wake up with back feeling a bit stiff and achy and it disappears quite quickly when I start moving and altogether by the end of my morning shower. I am female and older than you at 70 but not overweight with no known spinal issues. In fact I have a supple spine naturally and also from yoga. Doc says most likely culprit is some mild arthritis in the lumbar region and poss my sleeping position. I sleep on my side (bit like the recovery position) and this gives a slight twist to the spine. I tried to adjust my sleeping position to get rid of the spinal twist but once I am asleep I magically go back to that position 😊. So I have decided to live with it and as long as it disappears quickly will not worry any further. But why not have a chat with your GP?. They really don't mind being "bothered" by this sort of query. Prevention or catching early is always preferable to waiting till it becomes something serious (although it probably isn't). Anyway, with waiting lists for scans being so long it's best to get yourself on the waiting list (if the doc suggests this). Alternatively maybe visit a good osteopath who should be able to help. Good luck and hope you sort it out

Thank you very much for your reply. This is very helpful to me. I sleep in my side also so will look into this. Last night I swapped bed side and layed on other side. To be honest this morning felt better than usual so maybe mattress may have something to do with it
