Bottles with tongue tie

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can help, my baby boy is nearly 4 weeks and we was told he has tongue tie but that it isn’t severe enough to be snipped as he can get his tongue out past his bottom - tbh it’s not something I want to put him through if he doesn’t need it either.

We’ve had to go to bottle feeding as he struggled to breast feed and lost a lot of weight but is now gaining well. We were using tomme tippee bottles and tried the colic ones but then were told my the midwife they can be to hard for baby’s with tongue tie and to get the avent bottles which I did and he fed well from them but dribbles and splutters out a lot from the side. The health visitor has said to try bottles with long thinner teats as they can go further back in the mouth, just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for bottles?

I didn't use them myself but there's a brand called Dr Brown's or Dr White's. Can't remember which!! My niece used them and I remember them having long teets and being good for anti colic.

Wishing you all the best with your newborn!

I've just seen the messages below. I used MAM bottles for my breastfed baby who had a minor tongue tie. He took to them immediately. I didn't think the teets were especially long but another shout out for MAM over here! Another plus is that they are easy to sterilise, though they cab leak.

Hey! My daughter had a tongue tie too that needed snipped twice. She lost weight and I had to express and offer top ups after every feed. The midwives at the feeding clinic recommended a latex teat as it’s easier for them to grip onto with their tongue so we tried Nuk bottles. My daughter was a complete bottle refuser though, still is at 10.5 months, but I know other people who had success with that brand. Hope you’re recovering well and your son is thriving. It sounds like he is. Xx

Thank you, someone else mentioned NUK it seems to be out of them or MAM. Oh bless her, he’s doing really well since we went on formula he had a couple of other problems which meant we had to stop breast feeding, I was disappointed but now seeing know it was for the best xx

My daughter is 4 weeks aswell with a tongue tie. We tried the tommee tippee colic bottles bottles for 2 weeks.. she could drink with them but was very dribbly!! We changed to the mam anti colic bottles 2 weeks ago and have seen a massive difference! No spluttering at all hardly. And she put on 8oz in 6 days with them.

Thank you, we use the MAM dummies which he seems to like. That’s brilliant, glad she’s doing well on them. Have they said whether your daughters will need to be snipped?

I got told They don’t snip them where I live unless it’s affecting feeding. And because she’s putting on weight so well I doubt they will. They have said they can often snap on their own though? Xx

We could only use the NUK bottles with our LG who was tongue tied. They were brilliant. Midwife recommended them and she fed well from them

Thank you, did you find your LG dribbled at all with them? I’m finding he’s dribbling so much with the Avent bottles I’m never sure how many ounces he’s actually drank.

I don’t remember her dribbling when she was taking the bottles. I had her tie cut as it was significant and wanted to breastfeed. She now pretty much refuses anything other than me. But I’ve noticed since she’s drinking from cups that she does dribble a lot. I saw a SLT who specialises in infant feeding and she thought it could be as a result of her tongue tie. She suggested that it could be down to her not being able to hold the liquid with her tongue. It might be worth talking to the hv and see if you can get a referral in your area. It might be different on your area but I had to wait about 18 weeks (was told this when the referral was made by the hv and she was correct)

I’ll just add she’s now ten months.

Hi lovely congratulations on the birth of your baby, I remember you from the IVF board 🥰 my boy had a tongue tie too, struggled to feed and put weight on and had horrendous reflux. Unfortunately midwives/HV/doctors aren’t trained to assess the impact of tongue tie on a baby - being able to stick their tongue out doesn’t mean it isn’t affecting the function of the tongue, hence the problems you are finding with bottle feeding.

I’m so sorry you’ve been given such duff advice about it, had they referred you to a tongue tie practitioner you may have been able to continue breastfeeding (if you had wanted to of course). Tongue tie can affect much more than just feeding (I found out I am tongue tied too and explains problems I have had!) if you look on the tongue tie practitioner website you can find one near you who can properly assess baby. I went to a clinic in Huddersfield who were brilliant, if you’re up north message me and I’ll give you the name. Or if you have any questions feel free to message me too xxx

Hello. My baby boy had tongue tie and we went from tommee tippee closer to nature anti colic to nuk to mam bottles. We love the mam bottles and dummies. Benjamin is also under the speech and language team for “disorganised swallow” and she recommended the mam range to us xx

My son had similar problems with a tongue tie, but his did need snipping. We changed to the Dr Brown bottles and have never had any issues since.

Good luck

We find MAM the best, TT collapse and Dr Brown get blocked. If you're using the perfect prep machine make sure you don't shake the bottle but swirl....makes so much difference xx

My LG had tongue tie (also only very slight), I couldn’t breast feed either & she lost a lot of weight at 5/6weeks they snipped it, it took seconds and didn’t bother her at all but helped massively. I found the Dr Browns bottles good (we also tried a few) good luck xx
