A consultant will simply look at your case and decide if any more in depth care is needed. They refer to consultants as consultants are trained in more depth as they are trained Drs. You won't have an extra scan unless the consultant feels there is need to do one. You'll only have 12 week and 20 week scans unless they think there is a problem. I have been put on 2 weekly scans from 30 weeks as they're concerned about how baby is putting on weight.

Your midwife probably refferedyou for peace of mind and just in case.

You could always ask why specifically the midwife referred you to the consultant.

Thanks Kate. I think she referred me due to the previous failed IVF, this is classed as a miscarriage even though I didn't have a traditional miscarriage if that makes sense.

Thanks for the info - I wish the consultant would scan me or even listen to the heartbeat - but I suppose if they think there is no need then I am grateful too.

They will probably listen for heartbeat if your over 16 week, but they wont scan you without a medical need.

Its quite common for all ivf pregnancies to be referred to a consultant as at one point they used to be deemed high risk. At my appointment the consultant didn't even bother seeing me - I was just told by the midwife that I would need to be checked at 36 weeks and again at 40 if I haven't had the baby. Like the previous poster said, you'll only get extra monitoring if there is cause for concern. I had to give a urine sample and have my blood pressure taken at the appointment. It's worth noting that it seems quite common for induction to be suggested if you haven't had your baby by your due date so it might be worth thinking about this in case in comes up in your appointment. Xx

Thanks jojo - this is a natural pregnancy this time. But I am happy if they are giving a bit of extra care after being through IVF just before my BFP.

I am also happy if I am not high risk

You'll have to give a urine sample at every consultant appointment, but you will do for all normal midwife appointments as well

Ah sorry, of course it was! They probably won't mention the induction then - that's just for IVF pregnancies (unless there were other reasons to induce you, of course). Sorry if I've just confused matters! Xx

I was given an app like that too I didn’t know what it was for either. Ended up obviously not needing it but I think I was put down as high risk as if said my 1st baby was 6lb 3oz well actually is she was 6lb 8oz. And maybe bc I’d had a mc 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes think that is the same as me then - IVF failed for them counts the same as a mc.....

I am happy to have it - any excuse to get reassurance things are progressing as they should. 🤞
