Pregnancy & Tablets

Myself & my husband are wanting to try for a baby but I take 6 Gabapentin & 2 Levetiracetam tablets per day. I was told to come off them (slowly) but was only down to 2 Gab (3 for a week then 2) & 1 Lev for 2 days when I took a seizure. My doctor hadn’t heard of anyone that had taken the 2 tablets & was pregnant but had heard of them taking 2. Doctor told me to come off one but that it was up to me. Thinking of coming off Gab but there is so much on both medication that is harmful. Has anyone stayed on either medication while trying? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Deb, when you say your doctor I guess it is your GP maybe (?) but if so I would ask to be referred back to a hospital consultant-led clinic about the medication to get expert advice as your specialist will know more about the issues and advise you further what to do - that's what I would do anyway. I would say I was worried about the possible risks and hospital doctors often liaise with pharmacy staff and other doctors if they are unsure in any way. Hope this helps. x

hey deb i have a 9 month old when i was pregnant i was on cocodamol, gabapentin gave up amytripsline and went down to 1 ibuprofen with the gabapentin there are no known side affects on babies but just to be sure i dropped from 6 a day down to 2 a day baby suffered no side effects its actually more harmful to both you and your baby to stop completely. i dont know about the other tablet im afraid if there are no known side effects and will stop you from seizures then i would keep taking until told otherwise. hope this helps good luck x

Actually ibuprofen is contraindicated in the first and third trimester. Also sounds like it's a different indication. I would presume if you suffer from seizures you see a neurologist... I would ask medication advice from themes having uncontrolled seizures in pregnancy is not a good thing

heya hun thats ok hope you have had some answers? and fingers crossed no other seizures etc. I am not sure what the other person said about ibuprofen only as i know for a fact that i was allowed to take 1 a day instead of 6 and no side affects! x

If you read the packet ibuprofen is contraindicated in pregnancy as it can cause premature closure of something called a ductus arteriousus which is part of the foetal heart. So please check your sources before giving incorrect information

in reply to roxannacar

Agreed. You aren’t allowed ibuprofen in pregnancy x

heya it says ask your doctor and thats exactly what i did and was allowed to drop from the 6 to 1 and gave them up at 30 weeks, its part of my group of tablets that i have to take for my bad back. im not giving incorrect information im talking from personal experience, and my baby is 10 and a half months nothing wrong with her heart, think its a thing you have to ask your doctor and your midwife which both agreed i can take them. x
