I've just started week 24 and been feeling really down for a while, mostly to do with my partner, us not bonding with the baby, and always waiting for the next thing I've done wrong, is it normal to feel so low?

Hiya. There have been quite a few ladies on here that have expressed the same concerns. Your hormones during pregnancy can be to blame for many things....mood being the main one lol. It can be quite normal to feel low during pregnancy. Maybe discuss this with your midwife...helps get it off your chest a bit too :-) If you feel at any time however it is unmanageable, perhaps pop to see your GP about it. Also, post on here. It's a good way to clear your head and speak to others who have been through it or can at least sympathise entirely! x

Hi Ddogs,

pregnancy can play a big part with your emotions especially during the 2nd trimester as your hormones are literally good at one moment & then it could be so bad you feel to cry.

If you & your partner are having a few problems it may just be you need to give him a bit of time to come to terms with being a father soon as this can cause a few issues as men in general do worry about the slightest things.

Im thinking this baby is going to be your 1st child together?

My advice is just to take it easy & give your partner some time, but if you dont want to do that you could maybe approach him nicely one day & talk to him about your feelings.

xx

I'm pregnant with my second baby and have felt overwhelmingly depressed at times, spent whole days crying, my now 22 month old hasn't known what to do with mummy, bless her. I found writing down all my fears and concerns and then considering the possible outcomes really useful, it helped me put them into perspective and realise I can overcome most of them and just need to ask for help. I also talked them through with my husband and he reassured me and admitted that he had been being rather grumpy and so that hadn't helped me. Don't worry about bonding with the baby, it's not something you can do much about at this stage. Once baby is here there are lots of things you can do; skin to skin, wearing baby in a sling, breastfeeding is amazing for bonding (although can be really hard at the beginning and is only something you can do).

If you don't want to talk to a health professional about feeling low, the NCT have a helpline where they can put you in contact with others that have gone through the same as you, Shared Experiences Helpline:

If you or someone you know needs the support of the Shared Experiences Helpline, call 0300 330 0700 on Monday - Friday from 9am – 7pm. You can leave a message outside of these hours and someone will call you back.

It gets better, I'm 33 weeks now and haven't spent a whole day crying for ages, definitely not since Christmas! I had a little 2 minute outburst the other day, but not for any particular reason and I soon sorted myself out - hormones!

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and I have been suffering from depression on and off during my pregnancy. I asked my midwife about this and she said that some women feel that way and ante natal depression is beginning to be recognised as well as post natal. I have bipolar as well and I have cycles of feeling happy and feeling sad. They can last for a few weeks each at the most or they can change on a daily basis. I don't know any advice I can give you apart from seeking help from your gp so they can refer you to counselling if things don't get any better. I've found it extremely helpful before.
