Another Diagnosis

I had an ophthalmologist appointment today and can now add asteroid hyalosis to my list of medical oddities. Anybody else have this diagnosis? It’s not a big deal, I don’t think. It’s just annoying. In fact, “annoying” is the best description to me for MS in general!

Never heard of it, please can you share what it is and what your symptoms are, and I am sorry for yet another abnormality 🤗

From what I understand, it’s a degenerative condition of the eye involving small white opacities in the gel between the lens and the retina. They are made up of calcium and phosphates or phospholipids. Some folks who have it aren’t bothered by it. Maybe it depends on how bad...I dunno. For me, what it is like is when your hair falls over your eye or you are looking through a screen....I really don’t know how to explain. I can see through it. It’s just there and annoying. If I try to look at it, I can’t directly. It moves as my eye moves. Does this make sense or am I talking gibberish? It’s like I’m constantly trying to brush something away from my eyes that isn’t there. Interestingly, it’s most often in folks over 55. I’m not. And 2:1 more likely in men. Well, I’m not that, either. Go figure.

I am so sorry, thank you for the explanation, it must be really irritating for you, 🤗

Thank you for the explanation. I misread your post at top as asteroid halitosis...and thought, huh, an asteroid with bad breath? Thank you for clearing that up!

Too funny. I guess that would be out of this world bad breath, huh? I sure hope that’s not what I have!

Not sleeping well. I'm trying to put the new lesions out of my mind at least until I see the NP at the neuro's office. Pending what she says I will press to talk to the dr. himself. Trying to erase this new info at least until my vacation ends. Leave tomorrow! Thanks for asking!

So sorry, very annoying, I am sure. Will it ever get better or degenerate?

I really don’t know. They want me to go back in 6 months to see if it progresses.

Sorry to hear you got this. Is there anything surgical that can be done or are there any glasses that can help?

Tinker-Belle profile image
Tinker-Belle in reply to JTZES

Yes, they can do surgery. However, it doesn’t interfere with my vision bad enough for me to want to do that. The doctor even said that. It’s just sort of a nuisance. Glasses wouldn’t help, though.

At least it is cureable if it continues to get worse.

Had to Google that one. Dr. Google did say there is treatment so that part is good. Never heard of this one! Hope it doesn't bother you.

Be careful if the doctor prescribes eye drops. I had different eye drops (beta blockers, steroids and a few others) which started my decline to the point that I am no longer able to walk without assistance.

Goodness. That stinks! No, he did not prescribe drops but I will be wary if he ever does.

I have spent half of my life at eye doctors' and had several eye surgeries. But I now refuse to go to them and see the optometrist who has seen me for 15 years.

That sounds pretty miserable. I’d like to avoid ever having eye surgery! Ow.

Cataract surgeries are pretty unavoidable as we get older. But I had cataract in my 20s as a result of these steroid eye drops.

Wow. That’s really young. My husband had cataract surgery several years ago and it made a world of difference for him.

I bet he couldn't see before the surgery and was able to see again.

Pretty much! My mom had it done much older than him even and she went from wearing trifocals to just needing reading glasses. That was pretty incredible.
