MS Abbreviations

- This is a copy of a post I made earlier this year. I thought with all the new folks we have on here, it might be helpful to re-post.

Abbreviations to define:

ACTH - Adrenocorticotropic Hormone

AMD – Advanced Medical Directive

AMP – Adenosine Monophosphate

BBB- Blood-Brain Barrier

** DYS - Dysphasia is a condition that affects your ability to produce and understand spoken language. Dysphasia can also cause reading, writing, and gesturing impairments.

Dysphasia is often mistaken for other disorders. It’s sometimes confused with dysarthria, a speech disorder. It may also be confused with dysphagia, a swallowing disorder.

I added this because I often transpose words when I try to speak or even type in a hurry. It's frustrating because I then have to explain myself.

Just wondering if any of you experience this??

I will be adding to my list: dysphasia [dis-fa´zhah]

impairment of speech consisting in lack of coordination and failure to arrange words in their proper order; due to a central lesion; see also aphasia. Called also dysphrasia.

I've transposed words and syllables all my life (look up Spoonerisms, named for a preacher who did these) and sometimes will say the wrong word because it begins with an identical syllable as the one I meant to say. So far, I can self-correct. I also struggle sometimes with polysyllabic words in speaking. Since childhood, when my father demonstrated how electricity can leap a gap, I've assumed it is just the way I am wired. In my case, it's an oddity, may make others see me as strange, but I don't worry about it. (But, I'm certain it partially explains why I am more comfortable writing than speaking since writing allows me the luxury of self correction before finalizing what I want to express.)

When I was in grade school, we had a classmate that transposed words, etc. When some of the bullies teased him, we had a lesson from our teacher and not only learned the lesson, it helped us be more considerate and helpful for him. That lesson stays with me today! The bullies were punished and had to explain the lesson in front of our whole class.😊📗

Even though the majority of members are in the USA this site is not restricted to only people in the USA so GP should also be included as it is the abbreviation used in other parts of the world for General Practitioner i.e. what the yankees call a PCP.

Also - HSCT doesn't stand for Human Stem Cell Transplant - it is Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, and is generally taken in an MS treatment context to be an "autologous" transplant i.e. one which uses the patient's own stem cells.
