Frankly, if I had the opportunity to not have to work, I would. And I would dedicate my time to non-profit work, helping businesses and people in a different capacity than being paid for it. Unfortunately, financially, I'm not there at all and need to work to pay for my living and my healthcare costs. And now with MS, I'm better off working for a company than trying to work on my own.
Twenty four years ago I was diagnosed with MS, lung cancer, and during surgery had a stroke. I was forced to go on SSDI. I sold my automotive repair business and spent lots of time in rehabilitation. I couldn’t do physical work but my mind was still there. I went back to work as an independent insurance adjuster for 21 years 👍. Was on DMT’s the whole time. Then three years ago throat cancer ♋️ kicked my rear. So I am back on SSDI and no chance of working anymore 🤬. Just depends on your health and type of job you go back to? Good luck with decisions 👍😊. Oh, honey, I feel you! I’m not 49, yet...AMAZING job you did! Shucks, I plan to creep my way up to 8 hr days! There will be no 12-16hr days for Kathy! Lol
I had to retire from full-time employment 10-years ago, and from "going to work" at all 5-years ago. I did worked for almost 40-years as a senior litigation paralegal in Washington, DC. Great job, loved to go to work every day, and I was good at what I did. I had wonderful employers that accommodated my growing disability. I hate being home, doing nothing, feeling useless. I feel that the skills I have are too valuable to waste watching daytime TV while doing my therapeutic exercises, eating and sleeping. So after a few years of feeling sorry for myself, I went on-line to look what's out there for people like me. I was lucky and persistent. Daily I would devote a few hours on-line. I was lucky and found a valuable local source. My community has a website and daily I looked for anyone needing clerical or legal assistance. I found an at home, part-time job marketing for a local residential appraiser, and then I found a better part-time job (at home) for a local reporting service (with nationwide business), transcribing interview and investigation reports from government agencies, all right up my alley. Not only is the work interesting, but current, valuable, important and necessary. I no longer fell frustrated that my talents are being wasted and feel that I am again contributing to something important. My message to you all is to network, search, ask friends, look in your community, at your church, at local schools and libraries ,... anywhere that might have something you can do (a few hours a day. or whatever is needed) from home. Be mindful of any money earned and be aware of the impact it may have on any disability benefits you may be receiving. I wish you well and would be happy to help you, if needed..
