Practice falling down

I haven't fallen yet and still get around pretty well. But I do have some issues with balance, osteoporosis, and muscle spasms that make me think I should be doing things to prevent falls as well as I can or at least minimize their impact. I stumbled on these videos and think I may try to practice some of this since we tend to be always caught off guard when taking a fall (unless you're a slapstick actor). I hope there is something I can learn from these.

Good find, greaterexp You did say that you 'stumbled' upon it? Ha :-D

Thanks for catching the bad pun. I did wonder what the doctor would say if I injured myself while practicing! "How did you hurt yourself?" "I was practicing falling."

Idk

That’s not how they taught us in airborne school...tuck and roll worked pretty well...and u know the Army, we practiced it over and over from various heights til we were ready to do our jumps ✈️

You probably never thought that training would come in handy for MS! Maybe they should add that to the manual. If you fall out of a plane, or if you get MS...

I learned to fall to the side greaterexp so I land on my thigh and upper arm. But that was self taught to protect my back.🤔

Great video! 🤗💕

That’s actually like the tuck and roll they teach in airborne.

That's what I thought erash ! Except I was never taught it. I learned the hard way! After having to learn to walk again!🤣😂 🤗💕

I went through this twenty four years ago in physical therapy over and over for two years 👍. Boy has it helped thru the years 🙏. I usually have a good fall about every three months 😲. Only have had bruises and bumps so it helps to know how to fall to prevent major injuries 👍🙏. Ken 🐾🐾

Ken, would you say the way this fellow does things is similar to the way you learned?

I only have one good arm and one good leg. This is more for someone without disability. Main thing I learned weather falling backwards or forwards is bend those KNEES! Don’t reach up and drop everything! Try to land on thighs and forearm so no broken wrist or hip. I have trained myself to go to the right as I don’t want to brake anything on my left good side. I went my first year with no use of right arm or leg 😖. I was a ginny pig at the college physical therapy department for two years getting out of wheelchair, walker, then cane, to hobble walk with brace. I can’t use a walker anymore or two canes as my right fingers are curled from neuropathy 😖. So manual wheelchair I go in circles 😜🤣😂 . So for me it is more tuck and roll when going down 👍🙏 Ken 🐾🐾

It’s so true that we have to adjust for our own areas of disability. I’m so glad you pointed that out.

Why does it look like he’s going to get wrist fractures with that fall method?

Pretty good share greaterexp . Thank you. 👏😎👍🙏😊

Very useful. Thanks for sharing. I used to trip all the time before my DX. Now that I feel a lot better, I am more confident with my walking and probably pay less attention. The downside is that when I trip now, it's really bad and I found myself falling flat on my face.

This is good but I usually fall on my back or my legs collapses. Do you have any tips for that ??

That same fellow doing this one video has several. Links to his others should come up when you bring that one up. The first one I saw was about falling on one's back and tips to reduce injury from a backward fall. He demonstrates how to avoid hitting one's head and how to avoid a hip fracture.

As Kenu wisely pointed out, we have to adapt to our own abilities and disabilities.

I happy you haven't had that first fall. Cause for me. Since I fell the very first time it was trying to tell me something was wrong. But I didn't catch on. Over the next couple of weeks more falls but I wasn't able to pull myself up anymore. Then crazy things started happening, I'll spare you the details. But next thing I knew. Ambulance guys were here. Off to hospital. then off to rehab. 2 months worth. Turned out between flareup and UTI. I was a mess. So watch the almost fell. Because its probably trying to tell you something. Just a heads up.
