Cleveland Clinic's Researchers have discovered a new sub-type of MS. As we all know MS was long thought of as being a Progressive disease that attacks the white matter in the brain and demylates the myelin causing disability and disease progression. The new research by Cleveland Clinic have disicovered a new subtype of MS that actually does not attack the white matter of the brain but instead attacks the neulrons in our central nervous system. In traditional MRIs nothing sets the two types of MS apart. The new subtype of MS is called Myelocortical MS or MCMS. In MCMS the attack on the neurons cause them to swell and on a typical MRI look very much like the lesions caused on the brains white matter by typical MS. The only way this was discovered was that a hundred patients with MS that had passed on donated their brains to scientific research and in 12 of those brains they discovered the new type of MS. This will help to lead to more individualized treatment and gives greater insight to the disability progression Factor many people with MS fight. It also highlighted a need to create an MRI that is more sensitive and looks at new factors that will help to distinguish the new type of Ms from the previous type. This is the first new really large advance in MS diagnosis in years and gave researchers positive hope that there will be additional MS facts and therapies discovered from this new type of MS. To find out more access the Cleveland Clinic research tab that deals with discovering a new sub type of MS. Remember together we are stronger and we can never give up hope because there is constant new information being found out about MS and the therapies that we can choose from.
