This is probably a conversation to have with your doctor. I can say that if the decision is to use an SSRI, then generally the dosage for OCD will be much higher than for depression. But it's important to ramp up slowly. Best wishes.

Please do not take any medication for OCD. None works. The only way out of OCD is cognitive behavior therapy with a psychiatrist. It took me only 6 months and I got my life back.

This is not true at all. Yes, therapy is necessary I agree 100 percent, but meds also help. I have had OCD for over 60 years. I feel great.

The most common medication for OCD=> Prozac, Zoloft, Zanax are highly addictive and you have to take them for the rest of your life in order not to have symptoms. So yeah this is not a solution . The only way out is CBT.

Sorry but Prozac is not addictive, although you do need to wean off of it slowly.

Different strategies work for different people. I consider both meds (an SSRI) and therapy to be crucial for me. Every doctor/psychiatrist I have ever asked has told me that SSRIs are not addictive and there is no problem taking them long-term unless they cause unacceptable side effects. Of course they should be used under a doctor's supervision, and symptoms often return if they are discontinued. But many people have no legitimate reason to discontinue them.

I agree that therapeutic techniques and a solid understanding of how OCD and the brain works are often essential for overcoming OCD, but meds are an important tool for many of us. I know several people who suffered unnecessarily for years, unable to do effective therapy, because they resisted medication. When they finally gave in to their therapists' advice and started meds, they could do the therapy and take steps toward getting their lives back.

This is false. I took medication in combination with ERP, and eventually was able to taper completely off medication. This was five years ago and I’m subclinical. MANY people go off antidepressants.

I literally cannot function without medications. I think it’s very important to find a good therapist who knows can will work best for you. I’ve worked for years only with one psychiatrist and she is never wrong when it comes to dosage and medications

Different med work differently for each individual. I took Prozac for many years but all of a sudden it stopped working for me. Now I take Trintellix, but with a small dose of Prozac (kind of as a 'booster' to the Trintellix). It has really zapped the OCD , but I have had OCD therapy...strongly believe in needing both therapy and meds to help.

Whichever one works for you. Work with a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist.

Hi there. I’ve been for years on Escitalopram and it’s works great for me. I sometimes can be on as low as 0.3mg for months and feel great. The highest dose I have taken when my ocd episode is severe is 20 mg the most. I live normal life because of the meds. It’s sad but it’s my reality and I accepted it

Fluoxetine has been so helpful for me.

It made my head so much quieter - whew. But I am doing ERP too - the medication gives me breathing space to do the erp.
