Pain with catheter

Hi, I don't know if anyone else has similar experience to my husband and can offer any advice, we will continue to seek medical help too, but don't seem to be getting real answers - anyway, my husband who suffers from MSA had a urethral catheter for about 6 months, but had terrible sharp pain in his penis for many of those months. It was decided that the trauma of inserting and then replacing the catheter may have been causing this. He then had a suprapubic catheter fitted and in the couple of weeks coming up to it being replaced, the pain returned. He had it replaced last week for the first time and since then has had more pain again. The nurse who changed it said it was probably due to bladder spasms which can cause pain in the penis. Apparently there is medication to help these spasms, but not very nice side effects. Not sure what to do next, had hoped the supra pubic c would end the pain! Thanks for any thoughts.

Is the pain in the penis localised,always in the same place,intermittant and if so for how long ?

Always in same place in penis. Can vary between a sharp pain for a couple of minutes or on and off for a couple of hours.

I would be suggesting to the GP or Consultant that a Cystoscopy might reveal trauma,scarring or other abnormality to be the cause of the pain. Of course the NHS waiting list could be months.In the meantime you could try any or all of the following (check with GP first)

Increase fluid intake

Alter pH of urine by drinking specific fluids e.g cranberry juice

More attention to cleaning the penis especiallly if there is still urine leakage via this route despite the suprapubic drain. Twice daily cleaning seems to minimise penile pain for me.

I have in case of prolongred penile pain squirted a shot of instillagel down the urethra. But whether that will be an approved medical solution could be doubtful. It worked for me.

Thanks Rev. He's drinking diluted fresh lemon juice in water and lemon barley. Doesn't like the idea of another cystoscopy though! Will try extra washing. He's been prescribed instillagel for that purpose you suggest, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to make much difference. Thanks for your comments.

Are you using a full 10ml syringe of instillagel. Male urethra can take up to 20ml I tnink

Thanks VirgieWillms,He still gets a bit of pain most days, but nothing like what it was with urethral catheter. Our GP and specialist both say the meds for bladder spasms would probably cause more problems than they're worth, so he has just continued with pain relief at the moment.
