2 way communication

Has anyone here used a 2 way radio sort of thing for communicating in the house .

If my partner is in bed and wants to attract my attention downstairs he has to shout (getting harder to do) . We don’t need a falls alarm just a way to get my attention when I am working at my laptop etc.

2 way radios can be quite cheap but wondered if anyone has used one and know how easy they are to use. He fumbles with the mobile quite a bit.

Would a two way baby alarm which allows you to talk to the baby be useful

Yes maybe - I think baby monitors have moved on a little since I last used one!

Hello Rafaina,

For some time Jackie and I have used a simple wireless doorbell for Jax to call when she needs me. We bought a relatively cheap one from Amazon with a couple of 'sounders' that we have placed at either end of the house. When we first bought it I kept on going towards the front door when the 'bell' was sounded! As it was one which had a number of sounds we fell upon a dog barking as the sound for us. The 'bell push' goes into a plastic box (the dog basket!) along with Jackie's phone and we move it to wherever she is in the house.

It works well as the distinctive sound can be heard anywhere in the house and I can respond quickly if need be....one press is come when you are free...two 'rings' or more is I need you now!

We have a more technological solution for those rare times when I'm out of the house but I don't think that's what you're after.

That sounds like the sort of thing we could use. Thanks I will take a look on the internet. Don’t think our cat will appreciate a barking dog tho !

We had a door bell too. he eventually found even a simple bell too difficult. I am great recycler but when he died i had great pleasure in destroying the damned thing which had woken me up so manytimes

Local council lent us a vibrating pager with a single big button. The receiver could be worn on a belt. But we mainly went for the doorbell option. 🙂Another option for being less able is a baby monitor, and some kind of baby toy that makes a noise when you place your arm on it. Kx

We had the pager with the big button which was supplied by North West Assistive Technology and also an old doorbell when we replaced it and realised that the old one was perfect for Geoff getting my attention when I had left him having time on the toilet. Worked great and was portable for holidays etc. (But sadly one day I couldn’t find it and realised that it had slipped from Geoff’s grip after He had pressed it and I apologise to the sewage workers who find odd things down there!!)

Our place is small so it's not something we need really especially as Al is in the living room. We have Alexa where he can shout Alexa help and she will text me and our children and ring the house phone for nights. This is going to be more difficult because even now 'like a wife' she ignores him. his words not mine. We've been considering the door bell option.

We don’t live in a mansion ! It’s a small house but I am working from home and usually have the music on so don’t always hear him. We don’t have an Alexa but that might be a good idea !

Our landline handset had an intercom function that we used - I got the BT handsets with big buttons, BT4600.

Hadn’t thought about landline. I never use it. We are quite techy so Alexa might be an option firstly.

We have a landline phone with my mobile on speed dial. I keep mobile in my pocket and if I'm wanted my wife just presses 1 on the phone.

My dad had a button he wore like a bracelet and mum had a little device she carried around and it would buzz if dad needed her. Great peace of mind for her

That sounds perfect - we are seeing OT this week and hopefully will see what we can get. Otherwise I think a simple doorbell might work.

Update. We decided to try an Echo Dot. If Mark is in bed he can ask it to call or text me when I’m downstairs working. It seems to work well and can play podcasts and music on demand. It’s the basic model at £30 and suits us for now.

We just got a Blink camera from Amazon this weekend for our pets but it is perfect for people too because they are cheap and they allow for you to talk to them while they are in a different room but they can reply if possible without pressing a button and you can see them. It can be linked through your phone.
