It is a Transient Ischemic Attack and is sometimes referred to as a mini stroke. The link to wikipedia below tells you far more. People can have them without even knowing.

This is maybe a silly question. I know that we have many other ailments that are not related to our condition, but does anyone suffering from PV have more than usual episodes of excruciatingly painful Urinary Tract Infections (more than one per year)?

mfbmt2011 explanation hit the nail on the head. I suffered from TIA in Feb. 2010. Symptoms in my case was impaired vision in left eye for about 5 minutes and bout of blurred vision on and off for several days. I spent 6 days in hospital and had mri and scans of head. These were clear and and the results were ok. The explanation given for TIA was probably due to platelets! I have not had a re-occurrence thank fully, I am no longer on aspirin due to stomach bleed. My platelets are now fairly stable at 400.

Hi crazy daisy

I have et and used to have repeated utis when I was on hydroxicarbimide - my specialist explained that this is filtered through the kidneys therefore more likely to happen and to obviously drink plenty of water and had cranberry tablets while on these meds! However since been on interferon and now Pegasys I haven't had a problem and at one time I was getting about 5/6 infections a year to the point where had investigatory surgery to check nothing else was wrong - it was ok and just scarring from other infections but was very surprised how meds can make such a difference! Everyone is different though nd knw alot of people are fine on hydroxicarbimide - are you on medication for pv? Take care Becky
