Has anyone with ET had or is considering getting a Platelet Rich Plasma injection for a bad knee or back problems? I’ve read the Platelet Rich Plasma injections can really help with back or knee problems but I’m afraid it wouldn’t work or be advisable for people with ET due to us having dysfunctional platelets.
I would think that Platelet Rich Plasma Injections would be either contraindicated or only used with great caution for someone with ET. This is an issue that would be best addressed with a MPN Specialist familiar with your case.
Hi George, I have been told it's not FDA approved and not covered by insurance so about $750 per shot. I personally do not know anyone that has done prp but I can tell you cortisone shots do tear up your cartilage and I know that from experience so sometimes it's best just to get right into the issue by doing surgery and who knows maybe the shots of PRP will work for you it's worth a try but I would say because of high platelets I would always ask your primary doctor because the facility is just going to tell you yeah go ahead and do it cause they want to make money so ask your doctor always -your blood specialist. Cortisone also hurts your liver and is a temporary fix, too bad the others not covered because it could work once you clear it.
Thanks for the responses. ChatGPT thinks it could be bad because with ET I already have extra platelets so adding more could be bad. Probably more to the story so I’ll ask my hematologist team and report back. Probably need to talk to someone who really knows the science behind how PRP is supposed to work too. A couple orthopedic surgeons think my blood issues could be a big part of my back problem already so while I’d be willing to stretch my budget to get a PRP injection I sure don’t want to flood my joints with more potentially harmful platelets.
I had plasma wrist injection for foot pain that would not resolve after breaking my foot and being in a cast for three months. Planter fasciitis and foot pain at the site of the fracture continued for two years until I finally found a good foot surgeon who removed the pin and did plasma Rich injection. Things improved considerably. I had no problems. Have ET CalR 1 mutation. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it. The only drawback is some insurance won’t pay for it and you will have to pay for it out-of-pocket, but it was worth it to me.
