On Tuesday morning at 1 am my nose started bleeding, one nostril, constant stream, at 3 am it hadn’t stopped so called nhs 111, they advised going to hospital.
However we’re at our sons 260 miles away from home. Small country hospital. They tried various things but it didn’t stop. By 5am I’d lost quite a bit of blood. Eventually put something up my nose and expanded it which worked. As the bleed is at the back I’d swallowed a lot, but brought it back. I’ve had a sore throat and cough for a few days.
Anyway they’ve kept me in overnight, hopefully I can go home later today.
I’m waiting for ENT doctor to see me. He said it was a weak vein that needs cauterising.
The Easter bank holiday is this weekend, and this is major tourist area.
Not how we expected our break to end.

Thinking of you lizzziep ,sounds very traumatic, I'm glad they did manage to stop it eventually. I also hope you get to see ENT specialist very soon and that you can enjoy the rest of your Easter break.
Here's hoping they let you out soon!!Not the Easter you'd been planning but these things happen .Good news that your seeing ENT so they can take your MPN into account.I expect you'll need to contact your Heam when your back.
Sorry to hear of your experience. I carry Cyclokapron on me always and it helps stop the bleeding. It was prescribed by my haematologist. Hope it clears up.
Good luck on the ENT appointment! My wife had a massive nosebleed two years ago, spent 30 hours in two hospitals waiting to be seen, eventually admitted and had the balloon put up her nostril into her sinuses. This was successful, but never saw an ENT doctor after, her platelets had risen to near a million at the time, which was probably the reason. She's had a couple more minor bleeds since, when her platelets have risen too high. I think Anagrelide causes weakness in vessel walls which may be to blame, for the past year or so she is on two Anagrelide a day instead of the three she had when the bleeds occurred.
I’ve been on Anagrelide previously to Rux so possibly connected. I had to have a transfusion as my haemoglobin was really low. Hopefully going home soon.

Thank you. I had a blood transfusion yesterday so feel a lot better today. I wanted to go home and attend my local hospital but they said it was too far for me to travel (260 miles)without a transfusion and possibility of further bleeding. Feel a lot better today, obviously needed the blood. I look as though I’ve been fighting, my nose and lips are swollen! The worst part is no hot drinks or food - struggling without my Yorkshire Tea!
Oh my goodness! I am so sorry to hear that your vacation took a wrong turn. Thank goodness you have gotten good care and hopefully no more interruptions to your visit with family. Take care!
Lizziep, I totally relate as I too get massive nose bleed. My ENT recommended a nasal emollient called Ponaris. You must use it every day and it keeps your nasal passage moist so that nothing dries or attaches. I have not had a nose bleed in a year and it has been a life saver! In the states it is hard to find so I have had to order from Amazon. A single bottle is $15USD and lasts about two months.
Sorry to hear that. The same happened to me and they put a cotton plug up my nose and inflated it plus asked me to take tranexamic acid as the blood wouldn't stop. I was sent home and then I had my nose causterized the next day. It's a pretty routine procedure after the non stop bleeding. Good luck with it all.

What a horrible experience! As it turns out, a series of severe nose bleeds was the primary symptom that eventually led to my diagnosis of PV back in 2015. I hope that your doctors are able to deal with this soon.
I had nose bleed also one side, they used a chemical to seal it the first time. The nose bleed returned, I had to have it cauterising by ear, nose, throat Doctor, it finally took care of it. It is not that bad of treatment, it's done really fast.
My partner had that happen at work one day, never had a bleed before. Same as you it took a long time to get it stopped, bungs put up the nose, all going down his throat and then eventually cauterised. Apparently it is quite common in the 'elderly' he was told (sorry for laughing Michael).
first of all, I’m really sorry for your experience. I was there and know how unsettling this is. My nose was bleeding like a faucet too. I don’t let hem cauterize. The doctor tried without numbing the nose and I jumped to the ceiling, then refusing further treatment in the emergency room from this newbie. They didn’t fine anything.
Back then, I called the ambulance immediately. They put a cold pad on the back of my neck and contrary to old rules of keeping your head back you should keep head tilted forward. That’s the treatment for bloody nose today. The bleeding reduced itself quickly but they got me to the hospital
I don’t take the usual 100mg of aspirin a day for my ET. Aspirin is in the body for up to a week. I take 50mg every other day and also Ginkgo.
Day 1 50mg aspirin am 120mg ginkgo eve.
Day 2 120mg ginkgo am and pm
Day 3 as day 1, etc.
Ginkgo is out of the body at 12 hours. This way I have protection with blood thinning, some aspirin and if I have another nose bleed, stop all and my blood is back to normal I. A day or two. Also, if I have any procedure done that includes cutting skin, operation or tooth out, I stop blood thinning for a day and I’m fine. 🙂
