Medication limit in Greece

Hello everyone, I was just wondering if any of you have taken medication to Greece recently. Now that we are out of the EU the rules state that you can only take 5 different prescription medications into the country. Has anyone entered with more than that? Any problems? I have 10 and have no idea about what I am supposed to do about it. Thanks

I have never heard of such a thing as a limit on the number of types of medications. I know for some countries you may need a written doctor's order for prescription meds. When I travel internationally, id do get doctor's orders. I have never been asked for them, but better safe than sorry. Suggest contacting the Greek embassy for clarification of the rules for bringing meds into the country.

I think it’s changed because the UK have left Europe

Just to be pedantic and make sure the rest of the world don't get confused, the U.K. has left the European Union, it will always be part of the continent of Europe 😉

That certainly needs follow up and clarification. Does Greece intend to prohibit medically complex people from visiting the country? Does this refer to prescription medication only or all medications?

Please do let us know what you learn.

It’s only for prescription meds

That makes me wonder - some things that are OTC in the USA may/may not be OTC in Greece. Never really thought about it.

Hi!I flew to Greece after Brexit with my handluggage filled with medications for + 3 weeks. Noone questioned me about it,going out or at return. I have always had a prescription with me,just in case ,but never been asked to show it. Not sure how it would legally turn out if you needed more than 10 medications but had to leave some at security check.

How about putting some meds in the hold. Do you think it’s worth writing to the Greek embassy?

I have just emailed the Greek embassy in London. Apparently they will reply within a couple of days. I will give everyone an update if/when I find out anything. Must be a lot of others with multiple medications.

Don’t think you will have any problems with Greece. Carry meds in original packaging. Doctors letter and always in hand luggage. Don’t put meds in hold as luggage occasionally goes missing. It’s true in some countries certain meds are not allowed and may be classified as controlled substances or require advanced permission. It’s not that long ago that travelers with HIV and meds were not allowed into the US. These controlled meds are usually certain psych meds, codeine based meds certain opiates. EU tends to have very relaxed rules

Hi there, Good question. I traveled with all my medication and my hubby also had very strong pain meds too. All you need is letter from your doctors confirming medication and script copy. Wishing you well.

Thanks for your reply. You were right. I’ve just had this rely from the Greek Embassy in London, might be useful for anyone else who wanted to know as it also contains their number to ring. As I have excess meds I needed to be sure about what to do.
